For example, you can boil down your search to \u201c20-inch Standard Size Large Filter Housings\u201d or \u201c20-inch Standard Size Small Filter Housings\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Housings normally have threaded connections for installation, but these connection sizes can vary.\u00a0 The most common connection sizes are \u00be\u201d and 1\u201d. The connection size on the filter housing <strong>must <\/strong>be <em>equal to<\/em> or <em>larger<\/em> than the size of the main water line at the point of entry.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how you can figure out what size your main water line is:<\/p>\n<p>The water line can have the size printed onto it, but it depends on the plumbing type. If it is not printed you will have to measure. Please note, plumbing size is normally a nominal measurement. This means it is not based specifically on the outside diameter, OD or on the inside diameter, ID. The nominal measurement is an average of the two.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of this.: One of the most popular home plumbing types is CPVC. For a \u00be\u201d pipe the OD is 0.875\u201d and the ID is 0.715\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still not sure? Here\u2019s another example: PEX piping is growing in popularity. For a \u00be\u201d pipe the OD is 0.875\u201d and the ID is 0.681&#8243;.<\/p>\n<p>Housings come in a few different sizes. The most popular sizes are the 20\u201d standard and the 20\u201d big blue. This normally installs on the top of the housing and is mounted to a wall or floor joist.
