While we are so proud of ourselves for making it ONE YEAR as homeowners, we must admit, this first year has not been easiest. However, figuring out which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filtersfast.com\/blog\/index.php\/2019\/06\/introducing-our-new-homeowner-series\/\">refrigerator filter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filtersfast.com\/blog\/index.php\/2019\/07\/new-homeowner-series-air-filters\/\">air filter<\/a> we needed was easy breezy thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filtersfast.com\/\">FiltersFast.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you\u2019re a longtime homeowner or have dreams of one-day having one to call your own, I hope you can learn from and maybe laugh at some of the crazy experiences we\u2019ve had as first-time homeowners. Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what we\u2019ve learned in our first year of homeownership:<\/p>\n<p>1) Things will break and you will have to fix them<\/p>\n<p>Truer words have never been spoken. When we first moved into the home, we had the luxury of not having to buy much. We received a lot of hand-me-down furniture and were able to negotiate to get the majority of the appliances with the house.<\/p>\n<p>So far, here are things that have broken\/we\u2019ve had to replace:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The dishwasher top rack broke twice<\/li>\n<li>After replacing the top rack twice, our dishwasher had had enough and broke altogether, so we had to buy and install a new one ourselves<\/li>\n<li>A brand-new GLASS lamp, shattered (I\u2019m not going to say who&#8217;s to blame, but it wasn\u2019t me and it wasn\u2019t our dog)<\/li>\n<li>Multiple wire shelves have fallen out of the wall (they weren\u2019t screwed into a stud, to begin with)<\/li>\n<li>Multiple batteries have been replaced in our carbon monoxide detector<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-20218\" src=\"https:\/\/www.filtersfast.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/rsz_img-7371.jpg\" alt=\"young guy fixing dishwasher\" width=\"2016\" height=\"1512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.filtersfast.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/rsz_img-7371.jpg 2016w, https:\/\/blog.filtersfast.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/rsz_img-7371-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.filtersfast.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/rsz_img-7371-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.filtersfast.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/rsz_img-7371-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2016px) 100vw, 2016px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2) The previous homeowners did a really good job at hiding stuff. We\u2019ve found multiple areas where the previous homeowners cut corners and went the cheap route, here are just a few:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The paint job? Horrendous. Nails were painted over, painters tape remains in some places, paint is all over the molding. They didn\u2019t even try to repair blemishes on the walls, they just painted over them.<\/li>\n<li>Shelving was not secured into the wall, as of right now, we\u2019ve had three full shelves fall out of the wall.<\/li>\n<li>They went with an inexperienced and cheap carpet installer. The carpet is cut along the walls and nails are sticking out of places.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3) Owning a house is expensive<\/p>\n<p>Besides the monthly mortgage payment, having to pay other bills for our security system, water, energy, etc. has been quite a shock to us. We\u2019ve had to cut out how often we eat out at restaurants and make sure we\u2019re not wasting too much water or electricity. Owning a house has for sure made us more conscious about how and where we spend our money.<\/p>\n<p>4) Owning a house is a lot of hard work<\/p>\n<p>Not only are we constantly spending money to pay bills, repair and replace things, we\u2019ve also put a lot of sweat and time into fixing the house to how we want it. We\u2019re the DIY type, so unless it\u2019s extremely complicated, we\u2019re going to figure it out ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>5) Amazon Prime and the Target clearance section will be your saving grace<\/p>\n<p>We initially signed up for Amazon Prime so that we could watch shows that were exclusive to Amazon video, but since we\u2019ve become homeowners, Amazon Prime has been our go-to. We\u2019ve found the parts we needed to fix our dishwasher, ordered things we realized we needed, etc. Needless to say, we won\u2019t be canceling our membership anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve also decorated the majority of our house with things I\u2019ve found on Target clearance end caps.<\/p>\n<p>6) You\u2019ll google \u201chow to fix\u2026.\u201d About 10,000 times<\/p>\n<p>If we had a dollar for every time we google \u201chow to fix\u2026\u201d we could afford 3 more houses.<\/p>\n<p>7) You\u2019ll figure out how often you need to change your filters and fall in love with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filtersfast.com\/auto-delivery.asp\">Home Filter Club<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Remembering to change our air filter is the last thing on my mind, so I\u2019ll go ahead and admit, I don\u2019t change it as often as I should. Same goes for our refrigerator filter, I drink a ton of water but forget about changing the filter until the change refrigerator filter light comes on. That\u2019s why I love that we signed up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filtersfast.com\/auto-delivery.asp\">Home Filter Club<\/a>. I\u2019ve set our air filter 6-pack to be delivered every 12 months and our refrigerator filter to be delivered every 6 months. As soon as our filters arrive at the door, I change them! We\u2019re constantly having to clean spots out of the carpet when he runs in muddy and wet from the backyard and we\u2019ve noticed that he likes to pull up the carpet near the walls too. So not only is our carpet super dirty, but it\u2019s also stripped up in a few places.<\/p>\n<p>9) Your big remodel dreams will become \u201cmaybe one day\u201d goals<\/p>\n<p>When we toured the house before we put in an offer, we saw so much potential and had so many big dreams for our first little house. For one, the kitchen is wayyyyyyyyy too blue and the shower is not an oasis, it\u2019s more like a tiny cramped box that leaks. After many in-depth conversations, we decided that we would do home projects only when we were available time-wise and financially.<\/p>\n<p>For example: Rather than gutting the whole bathroom and making it the oasis we had been dreaming of, we decided that it might be best to focus on changing the things that we don\u2019t like and living with the things we don\u2019t mind.
