So, without further ado\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How many types of pool filters are there?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are three main types of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filtersfast.com\/Pool-Spa-Filters-cat.asp\">pool filters<\/a>: Sand Filters, DE (Diatomaceous Earth) Filters, and Cartridge Filters. A <strong>sand filter<\/strong> employs sand as a filter media and typically has a filtration efficiency of 40 microns. They should be replaced every 3-6 years. A <strong>diatomaceous earth filter<\/strong> has a 5-micron filtration efficiency and should be cleaned every 4-8 weeks.\u00a0A <strong>cartridge filter<\/strong> has a filtration efficiency of 10 microns, and should be replaced seasonally.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is a micron?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When it comes to filtration, the smaller the particle removed, the cleaner your pool water will be. The best filters remove impurities you cannot see with the naked eye. This is where microns come in. A micron is a unit of length equal to one millionth of a meter (1\/1,000,000 m) or 0.0000394 of an inch. The human eye can only see particles as small as 35 microns without magnification. For comparison purposes, typical atmospheric dust measures between 0.001-10 microns. <em>Always<\/em> pay attention to the micron rating of a pool filter and remember, the lower the micron rating, the more efficient the filter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What type of pool filter is best for me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The choice is largely up to you. However, verify which types of pool filters are recommended for your swimming pool before deciding on a type. Due to relatively easy maintenance and overall performance, cartridge filters are an ideal choice for new\/first-time pool owners.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do pool filters require maintenance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, they do, and backwashing (reversing the flow of water through the filter) is key! Sand filters can only be backwashed, and it is generally easy to do so. DE filters may be partially cleaned by backwashing, but after each backwash the filter media should be replaced with a new one.
