{"id":445,"date":"2010-05-28T20:10:40","date_gmt":"2010-05-28T20:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.filtersfast.com\/blog\/?p=445"},"modified":"2014-02-20T10:32:28","modified_gmt":"2014-02-20T15:32:28","slug":"gasland-an-inside-look-at-americas-natural-gas-drilling-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.filtersfast.com\/blog\/gasland-an-inside-look-at-americas-natural-gas-drilling-campaign\/","title":{"rendered":"GASLAND: An Inside Look at America\u2019s Natural Gas Drilling Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Would you poison the planet for $100,000?<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a title=\"Gasland\" href=\"http:\/\/tvbythenumbers.com\/2010\/05\/27\/sundance-award-winning-documentary-gasland-debuts-june-21-exclusively-on-hbo\/52625\" target=\"_blank\">recent article<\/a>, filmmaker Josh Fox faced this question when he received a $100,000 offer in exchange for the natural gas drilling rights to his property in the Delaware River Basin.\u00a0 Instead of taking the money and keeping quiet, he decided to use his talents to make a film that exposes the harsh reality of America\u2019s natural gas drilling campaign.\u00a0 Touring 24 states across the country, Fox, in his Sundance award-winning documentary, <a title=\"Official movie website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gaslandthemovie.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">GASLAND<\/a>, reveals some horrific truths about how the natural gas industry is poisoning our water and air, causing chronic illnesses in residents near drilling areas, and contributing to a crisis that could affect millions more, long-term.\u00a0 What does this crisis look like in real life?\u00a0 Here\u2019s what\u2019s happening in several major cities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In Dimock, Pennsylvania, close to the New York City watershed, animals began losing their hair after the drilling started, most likely from the toxic water they ingested.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In DISH, Texas, emissions from natural gas wells and pipelines measure way above the public health standard for cancer-causing benzene and the neurotoxin carbon disulfide.\u00a0 In the Dallas-Fort Worth area, the emissions are greater than the air pollution caused by all the cars and trucks combined.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>In Wyoming, a water well erupted with a geyser of natural gas for three days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If that&#8217;s not enough to make you think twice, watch this video:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"400\" height=\"225\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=4680635&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1\" \/><embed width=\"400\" height=\"225\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" src=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=4680635&amp;server=vimeo.com&amp;show_title=1&amp;show_byline=1&amp;show_portrait=0&amp;color=&amp;fullscreen=1\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/4680635\">CAN YOU DO THIS WITH YOUR TAP WATER?<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/user825056\">JOSHFOX<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Flammable tap water is not the most disturbing of Fox\u2019s findings, however.\u00a0 The drilling process, called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which leads to all of this contamination, was exempted in 2005 by the Bush-Cheney Energy Policy Act from United States environmental regulations, including the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Air Act.\u00a0 What\u2019s more, the fight has now moved to Congress, where lobbyists are trying to prevent legislation that would reverse the exemption, making chemicals used in the process subject to the Safe Drinking Water Act, once again.<\/p>\n<p>I repeat: lobbyists are trying to PREVENT legislation that would reverse the exemption\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Pardon me while I try to make sense of this.\u00a0 Instead of preventing accidents like the recent BP oil spill, our very own leaders are ignoring the problem while we scramble to find ways to clean up the mess?
