Water Charities – A Comprehensive List

Millions of people worldwide die each year from waterborne illness. In many third-world countries, women walk barefoot on harsh terrain for hours each day to collect water for their families.

Dirty water, full of disease, can cause illness or death. People usually collect it in gas cans that weigh at least 40 pounds. They strap these cans to their backs and carry the heavy water home.

Women are often the ones who spend a significant amount of time collecting water for their families. As a result, they frequently miss school or are unable to care for their young children. This perpetuates the cycle of poverty.

Why Clean Water Matters: The Numbers

Although people have made significant progress in addressing the global water crisis, the statistics remain staggering:

  • Approximately 1 in 10 people lack reliable access to clean drinking water.
  • Hundreds of millions must walk at least half an hour to reach a water source multiple times a day. And many times it’s contaminated. This means time lost that could be spent in school, at work, or with family.
  • More people have mobile phones than have access to basic sanitation, like a toilet.

This is why clean water is so important. Fortunately, numerous water charities are working toward the goal of providing clean water to everyone on Earth.

Why Nonprofit Water Organizations Matter

Clean water is something that many of us take for granted. However, billions of people still lack access to clean water. That’s where nonprofit water organizations step in.

Focusing on where the need is greatest, these charities are working to bridge the staggering gap between those who have safe water and those who do not.

Every water charity’s role is different. Some groups build wells or provide homes with water filters. Others work to empower communities with lasting solutions.

By championing clean water access, nonprofits can tackle issues like:

  • Minimizing exposure to waterborne illnesses and improving health.
  • Eliminating the time and need to travel to a water source by bringing the water source closer to home. Children stay in school, and women can use their time in other ways to improve the lives of their families and communities.
  • Creating opportunities for entrepreneurship.

Water changes everything. Water charities can create and transform communities through education, advocacy, and hands-on projects. They not only address immediate needs but also lay the groundwork for lasting progress.

How Water Nonprofits Make a Difference

There are a lot of water charities out there. That’s why it’s essential to recognize that they are driving significant change by addressing the root causes of the clean water crisis. Their combined efforts span the world and have touched the lives of millions. Here’s a look at how the combined efforts of water charities make an impact:

  • Wells & Water Systems: Thousands of wells and water points have been installed in both rural villages and bustling towns. This helps provide numerous communities with their first access to safe, reliable water.
  • People Reached: Over 20 million people now have access to cleaner, safer water. Families in countries ranging from Haiti and Honduras to Ethiopia, India, China, and Sierra Leone have been impacted.
  • Long-Term Commitment: Maintenance and sustainability are at the forefront—every year, teams log thousands of service visits and trek thousands of miles to keep water flowing safely. Some organizations empower the local community to take care of their systems, creating long-lasting impact.
  • Health & Hygiene Education: Beyond filtration, a few water organizations also offer vital hygiene training, with education programs ensuring that new water sources actually translate into healthier, longer lives.
  • Filters Distributed: Innovative filtration and purification tools have been delivered to thousands, taking safe water right into people’s homes.

Their impact extends far beyond mere numbers. It’s the difference between being sick and being healthy, lost time and missed chances. It’s also about the dignity that comes with a basic need finally being met.

A Comprehensive List of Water Charities

Many of the organizations listed below are already making a big difference for women and children in rural villages. Several others are also working to improve water sources in the United States.

Many of the water-focused charities we’ve listed gather funds through individual and group contributions, with the majority, or even the entirety, of the funds directed towards helping those in need access safe drinking water.

This list was last updated in November 2025.

Ryan’s Well Foundation

The Ryan’s Well Foundation came about because of one six-year-old boy’s simple solution to the world water crisis. After hearing from his first-grade teacher that people in different parts of the world were dying due to contaminated water, Ryan did extra chores around his house and began speaking in public to raise money for a well in Uganda.

The well was built by the time Ryan turned seven, and since then, his efforts have grown to create the Ryan’s Well Foundation. This Canadian-registered water charity has successfully created over 500 sustainable, safe water, sanitation, and hygiene projects in 16 different countries.
