3 Essential Tips to Save Money on Replacement Pool Filters

Published June 11, 2025 by Brandon Leave a Comment

family enjoying clean water in pool with quality replacement pool filters

There’s no better way to cool off in the sun than by dipping into your swimming pool. As fun as that can be for your friends and family, it may not be so great for your wallet since replacement pool filters can be expensive. If you’re reading this blog, you’re already ahead of the curve since you’re probably looking for an economic solution. Let’s discuss fantastic ways to save money and enjoy a safe swim.

Tip 1) Cleaning Filters with a Filter Cleaner

This tip may sound obvious, but you’d be surprised how easy it is to overlook: You can clean your pool filters!

Pool filters can be cleaned and reused a certain number of times if you use a proper cleaning solution.

Now, here is the crucial part (one that many overlook) – cleaning your filter with a filter cleaner.

Regular household cleaners are not suitable for cleaning pool filters. They can leave behind harmful residue that can contaminate the pool water, making it hazardous. Some harsh chemicals can damage the filter material.

A pool filter cleaner is usually recommended for maintaining your swimming pool. But if you’re living on a budget, spending money on something you can only use for one task may not seem worth it. Our Filters Fast® Multipurpose cleaner is strong enough to remove all residue from your filters, yet gentle enough to keep the material unblemished. You can also use it to clean other surfaces, making it very economical. So, before looking for replacement pool filters — give this a shot!

Next, let’s discuss the proper way to clean your pool filters based on type. To learn more about the different types of pool filters and how to select the best one, check out our blog, Selecting The Best Pool Filter in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide.

Cleaning swimming pool before replacement pool filter

Pool Cartridge Primary Cleaning (Hosing)

• Turn off the pump and remove the filter cartridges. Rinse the cartridges with a hose in moderation to prevent damage.
• Ensure that you clean the dirt and debris from between the pleats.
• Don’t be afraid to gently brush the surface with a soft brush to pick up small particles.

Pool Cartridge Deep Cleaning (Soaking)

• For the stickiest of situations, it’s a good idea to soak the cartridges overnight in a cleaner.
• After soaking, wash the cartridges with a hose while focusing on the pleats.

Backwashing (Sand and DE Filters)

Backwashing is the most common way to clean sand and DE filters.
• Turn your sand / DE filter valve to the backwash position. This will cause water to flow through the filter in the opposite direction, thereby cleaning it.
• For DE filters, you may want to clean the housing and the O-ring with a hose.

So, how often should you clean your pool filter?

That is a great question; it also depends on your filter type. The most common filter type, cartridge filters, should be cleaned once or twice a year. It’s important to note that pool size and usage rate affect cleaning frequency.

Sand filters should be backwashed weekly, whereas DE filters should be backwashed monthly. Both should be deep-cleaned annually.

How often can you clean your filters before they need to be replaced?

In most cases, you can clean your cartridge filters 2 to 3 times before they need to be replaced. Cartridge filters should be changed every 3 to 6 months, or if you notice the pressure gauge reading increases substantially during operation. As mentioned, sand filters should be backwashed weekly and replaced every few years, while DE should be backwashed monthly and replaced annually.

Tip 2) Keeping the Pool Area Clean

We know what you’re thinking. How will tidying the area around my pool help me save money? Hear us out because this goes multiple ways, both your pool and its surroundings.
Usually, pools are in outdoor settings with lots of lovely trees, grass, and plants. These things can become debris that gathers in your pool, clogs your system, and leads to high energy costs and professional cleaning.

Less debris in the water means less stress on your equipment, saving you money on pool repairs and replacements. To get started, use a rake to remove the leaves and debris from the area surrounding your pool. This can prevent bacterial growth and prevent costly repairs.

After that, use a cleaning solution (Filters Fast® Multipurpose Cleaner, anyone?) to scrub the pool’s walls and tiles. Doing this after each swim will save you a lot of work later and help maintain a clean pool.

Once you’ve cleaned the surroundings, it’s time to clean the pool water. Start by monitoring and testing the pool’s chemistry. We advise doing this regularly to prevent the growth of germs and algae.

The final action is easy to perform but equally easy to overlook. Use a pool cover to shield your pool from the weather. Over time, severe weather will result in erosion and destruction.

Tip 3) Using Compatible Replacement Pool Filters

There are two types of pool filters available: original equipment manufacturer (OEM) filters and compatible filters. OEM filters are filters made by the official manufacturer of your device. The main benefit of getting your filters directly from the manufacturer is the assurance that they will work. Although you have this guarantee, you will likely pay a higher price.

If you’re looking for a more economical solution, a compatible pool filter replacement, the alternative to OEM filters, would be the answer. These filters can be a great solution, but you must ensure they will work with your equipment.

Here are some things to look out for when choosing compatible filters. First, you want to ensure the filter is correct for your specific pool. Confirm your pool’s size, volume, and flow rate. Also, know which pool filter type you need (sand, cartridge, or DE filters).

Knowing these details will help you avoid an incompatible filter.

You’ll also want to check the quality of the filters by examining the materials and confirming they match those used in an OEM filter. Checking the filter manufacturer’s reputation and efficacy guarantee can also help avoid purchasing a counterfeit filter.

If you’re looking for a reputable alternative to OEM filters, the Filters Fast® brand is a safe bet. All our filters are guaranteed to meet or exceed the performance and longevity of compatible OEM pool filters. We also include a specification sheet on each product page that you can view to help you determine whether it’s the best fit for your needs.
