Maintenance is key to keeping your humidifier in good shape.
Why is cleaning your humidifier necessary?
- To make sure it works! Like any other appliance, neglect can shorten the life of the machine.
- To prevent the risk of spreading harmful bacteria and mold into the air. The water in your humidifier can stagnate if left sitting for a while. Stagnate water can become a breeding ground for bacteria.
If you turn your humidifier on for the first time in a while without properly cleaning and disinfecting it, you could risk breathing in bacteria-laced vapor, which can cause problems that could negatively affect your health. Just taking a few minutes to properly clean your humidifier could not only make it last longer, but it will also help keep you healthy!

How to Deep Clean a Humidifier
You’ll need some items you might already have at home to clean a humidifier.
Here’s what you need:
- White vinegar
- Bleach or hydrogen peroxide
- A soft-bristle brush
- Water
- Clean towel
- Gloves
- Goggles
Not all humidifiers are made the same, but they all usually feature the same two things:
- Water tank
- Base
Any other non-electrical parts can be cleaned the same way. Avoid cleaning control panels or electrical parts, as this might damage them.
Here’s how to deep clean a humidifier:
- Make sure it’s unplugged and disassembled. Dump any excess water that is left in the tank out. If your humidifier contains a filter, remove it before you start cleaning. In most cases, you can clean your humidifier’s filter by running it under cool water and letting it air dry.
- Pour enough white vinegar into the base to cover the areas that regularly come into contact with water. If your humidifier has small parts, you can soak those in vinegar, too. Let this sit for at least 30 minutes. Once it’s done, use the brush to scrub any leftover residue.
- While you wait for Step 2 to finish, mix 1 teaspoon of bleach (or 3% hydrogen peroxide) to 1 gallon of water and fill the tank at least halfway. Swirl the solution around until the entire tank is coated.
- After you’ve cleaned the base, tank, and all other components, rinse them with water and shake them dry to dislodge any excess cleaning solution or water trapped inside. You may have to rinse them a couple of times before the smell of your cleaning solution disappears. Once you do this, lay each piece out on dry towels and let them fully dry.
- Once each component has been dried, reassemble the humidifier. Fill the humidifier tank with mineral-free water and enjoy the benefits of your humidifier.
