Crane humidifiers are great, aren’t they? They’re a huge help during the dry winter months and a relief when you’re sick. We’ll go ahead and say it, humidifiers are a must-have for daily life!
In order to keep your humidifier in good shape, maintenance is key.
Why is cleaning your humidifier important?
- To make sure it works! Like any other appliance, if you don’t take care of it, it could shorten the life of the machine.
- To prevent the risk of spreading harmful bacteria and mold into the air. The water in your humidifier can become stagnate if it is left sitting for a while. Stagnate water can become a breeding ground for bacteria.
If you turn your humidifier on for the first time in a while without properly cleaning and disinfecting it, you could risk breathing in bacteria-laced vapor which can cause problems that could negatively affect your health. Just taking a few minutes to properly clean your humidifier could not only make it last longer, but it will also help keep you healthy too!

To clean a humidifier, you’ll need a few items that you might already have at home.
Here’s what you need:
- White vinegar
- Bleach or hydrogen peroxide
- A soft-bristle brush
- Water
- Clean towel
- Gloves
- Goggles
Not all humidifiers are made the same, but they all usually feature the same two things:
- Water tank
- Base
Any other non-electrical parts can be cleaned the same way. Avoid cleaning any control panels or electrical parts as this might cause damage.
Here’s how to clean a humidifier:
- Make sure it’s unplugged and disassembled. Dump any excess water that is left in the tank out. If your humidifier contains a filter, make sure to take it out before you start cleaning. In most cases, you can clean your humidifier’s filter by running it under cool water and letting it air dry.
- Pour enough white vinegar to fill the base so that it covers the areas that regularly come into contact with water. If your humidifier has small parts, you can soak those in vinegar too. Let this sit for at least 30 minutes. Once it’s done, use the brush to scrub any leftover residue.
- While you’re waiting for Step 2 to finish, use a mixture of 1 teaspoon of bleach (or 3% hydrogen peroxide) to 1 gallon of water and fill the tank at least halfway. Swirl the solution around until the entire tank is coated.
- Rinse the base, tank and all other components with water after you’ve cleaned them and make sure to shake them dry to dislodge any excess cleaning solution or water that is trapped inside. You may have to rinse them a couple of times before the smell of the cleaning solution you used goes away. Once you do this, lay each piece out on dry towels and let them fully dry.
- Once each component has been dried, reassemble the humidifier. Fill the humidifier tank with mineral-free water and enjoy the benefits of your humidifier.
