Have you started to notice a lot of alkaline water options showing up at your local grocery store?
Many people have questions about alkaline water and we’re here to answer them!
What is alkaline water?
If water is alkaline it means that it has a high pH level.
What does pH mean?
pH stands for Potential Hydrogen. The pH scale is an indicator of the relative acidity of a substance aka the presence of H+ ions. If there are a lot of H+ ions present, it means the substance has a low pH and if there are not many H+ ions present that means it has a high pH.
When a substance has a high pH, that means it is basic and if it has a low pH, that means the substance is acidic. Normal drinking water usually has a pH of 7 which is neutral on the pH scale. Alkaline water normally has a pH of 8 or 9 which means that there is a low presence of H+ ions in the water.
How is alkaline water made?
Alkaline water naturally occurs when water passes over rocks and picks up the minerals. However, if you are buying bottled alkaline water, it has most likely been through a chemical process called electrolysis. Electrolysis is a technique that uses an ionizer to raise the pH level of regular water. Electricity is used to separate the more acidic molecules in the water. To be considered alkaline water, the water must contain alkaline minerals and negative oxidation-reduction potential. The oxidation-reduction potential is the ability of the water to act as an antioxidant.
Is alkaline water good for you?
Many claims have been made about alkaline water benefits, but there is not enough evidence to support them.
Is drinking alkaline water bad for you?
Drinking high alkaline water can lower your stomach’s natural acidity which is what it needs to fight off bacteria and stop undesirable pathogens from entering your bloodstream. It can also cause gastrointestinal issues and skin irritation. Drinking too much alkaline water can agitate your body’s normal pH level which can lead to metabolic alkalosis.
Here are some of the symptoms of metabolic alkalosis:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Hand tremors
- Muscle twitches
- Tingling in extremities and/or face
- Confusion
Alkalosis can also decrease calcium in the body and can affect your bone health.
Is drinking alkaline water safe?
Our answer: It’s up to you.
