A fairly recent research study has found that Splenda can accumulate in drinking water after it is excreted from the human body. The reason for this is that neither the human body, nor modern wastewater treatments are capable of breaking down the artificial sweetener.
If you’re a lover of diet soda, this finding probably holds little significance for you. But what if I told you that you’re better off drinking regular Coke instead of diet?
Please don’t misinterpret, here. I’m not saying you should just go out and drink regular soda in large quantities every day. Like most things, sugar should be consumed in moderation. But, ultimately, sugar consumed in moderation is better than Splenda consumed in moderation.
Splenda (a.k.a. sucralose) reduces the amount of good bacteria in your intestines by 50 percent, affecting your body’s overall health. Animal and human safety studies in the days prior to its FDA approval revealed decreased blood cells, increased male infertility, enlarged and calcified kidneys, spontaneous abortions in nearly half of the rabbits given sucralose along with a 23 percent death rate, compared to a 6 percent death rate in the control group. Of the 110 studies done, only two of them were human studies, and the longest one was conducted over only a four-day period. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t exactly make me feel like Splenda is as “safe” as the FDA reports. And now we’re learning that neither our digestive juices, nor the chemicals used in modern water treatments are capable of breaking it down???
Friends, please join me in my quest to answer this question: Is there a water filter that will reduce or remove sucralose particles? I suspect that reverse osmosis will do the job, but I can’t say for sure, just as there’s no hard evidence to support the ability of water filters to remove pharmaceuticals (which have also also ended up in our water supply because of human excretion.) If you have an answer to this, please leave us a comment!
Meanwhile, until this question gets answered, Dr. Mercola suggests that you can help cut down on Splenda in drinking water by ceasing consumption of the artificial sweetener altogether. That means no more diet drinks. Oh well, regular soda tastes better anyway, right?
And, you know what’s even more healthy and refreshing than regular soda? Filtered water.

I plan on buying a reverse osmosis filter. More people need to be aware about this problem, so that we can incite change.
