Changing your refrigerator water filter is easy, but that doesn’t mean it can’t come with a set of challenges. Below are some common issues that arise when replacing your refrigerator water filter and troubleshooting tips for each one.
If you have your own troubleshooting advice, feel free to leave them in the comments below. If you feel like we missed anything, let us know and we’ll gladly add it in!
Common Refrigerator Water Filter Installation Mistakes
Let’s start with common installation mistakes that could cause the installation of your new fridge filter to go less than smoothly:
- Protective caps not removed from your new filter. Prior to installing your new refrigerator filter, remember to remove any protective caps from it.
- Failure to flush the filter. Many forget to do this, but it should never be forgotten. You can find out how and why to flush your filter here.
- Throwing away the reusable knob. For base-grill filters, don’t throw away the reusable knob, you may need it later!
Now let’s get into the troubleshooting!
Refrigerator not dispensing water after replacing water filter
If this happens, then the water filter is most likely not snapped in all the way. If you feel that it is, and you’re still having issues, it could be the water valve leading to the refrigerator. To check, re-install the old filter. If water comes of the old filter and not the new filter, then there is an installation problem with the new filter and not the water valve. If water does not come out of the old or new filter, then the problem is the water valve.
Small drip or leak after installing the new refrigerator water filter
Remove the fridge filter and re-fit it into the refrigerator with a sharp twist to lock into position.
Water flow is irregular
If this happens, there is likely still air in the lines. Press down the dispenser lever for 2 minutes until the water starts to flow freely.
Difficulty with removing or installing refrigerator water filter
There is no secret to this– sometimes all that is needed is a little extra force. For removal, the problem is sometimes pulling the filter down and out. Try rocking the filter sideways while pulling down, this should work.
Tip: Remove the top shelf from the refrigerator as its sudden release could cause damage. For installation, apply more force and keep turning to lock into position.
Water tastes different
Refrigerator water filters cannot add anything to the taste of water as they only remove chemicals and contaminants from your water. The older the fridge filter is that you are replacing, the more likely you are to notice a taste difference as your drinking water is now under greater (and more effective) filtration that it had been.
Water filter appears to be clogged, before its time to be replaced
Depending on water quality and usage, your refrigerator water filter may not last the full 6-months. If your water flow starts to slow, it could be clogged and would need to be replaced. Of course, if you have experienced a sudden drop of water quality (could be caused by a number of factors/situations) it is best to determine exactly what is wrong by conducting a home water test. You can do this yourself, or have your municipal water source supply you with the information.

Randy,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We recommend using the manufacturer’s instructions to removing and reinstall the filter. After that we would suggest wiping down the filter to remove any water drops. There should not be any water drops afterwards. If so, there may be an issue with the filter or the insertion point on the refrigerator. For technical support we would recommend reaching out to GE directly.

Bernadette,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend reviewing the manufacturer’s filter replacement instructions; filter removal is normally the reverse. We agree channel locks should not be necessary. We would recommend inspecting the filter insertion point. We want to make sure there are no obstructions or damage to the filter housing. If none of that is present, we would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for troubleshooting support. Note, some refrigerators can function without a filter, but we generally would not recommend that.
Bernadette says
Samsung refrigerator. The square filters. Impossible to get out without channel locks. Tried to get new one in and just flooded the whole refrigerator. Do I have to have a filter. Would rather go without one?
Or any secret to getting it in? I’ll never buy Samsung again.

Daniel,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please remove the filter. Inspect the tip of the filter and the insertion point in the refrigerator for any possible obstructions. Reinstall using the manufacturer’s instructions, and ensure a proper seal is made. Flush the filter by running the water dispenser. This should reduce any air trapped in the water lines. If this does not help it is possible the filter may be defective. If that is the case please reach out to the vendor directly for a replacement.

Amanda CPhT says
I replaced the filter when the light cans on and threw away the old one. The new one will not Lock into place, but it turned into place and it seemed to be snug so I figured it was fine. Nope! Water everywhere within a day.
I bought another filter (exact same model and LG brand) and the same thing is happening. It will not lock into place and it leaks water everywhere.
The prior filter came out in tact without issues. I have no idea why the new filter(s) won’t snap in place.
Also, I turned off the water and cleared the line. I double checked the make sure I have the correct filter with the manufacturer and I do.
Any suggestions ?!? I sure hope so :0(
Katie says

Jessica says
Water was coming out after changing the filter for about 12 hours, then stopped? What could of caused this?
Katie says
Lisa,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Depending on the application there could be two different types of caps. One is a disposable cap used to protect the prong(s) of the filter. The other is a reusable cap that attaches the back of the filter and is used like a knob. We would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer of your refrigerator for technical support.
Lisa says
I forgot to take the cap off before inserting the new filter. The filter won’t go all the way in and I can’t get it to come out to remove the cap. What can I do?
Katie says
Marya,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would first recommend reinstalling the old filter to rule that out. It is possible an internal component may be in need of replacement. We would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.

Mike,
Thank you for reaching out to us. The closest reference we see is part number RPWFE. Please review the installation instructions carefully. This should be included with the new filter cartridge. There are specific instructions for alignment and insertion (link from GE copied below). There is an emphatic warning against turning the cartridge. If you have turned the cartridge it is possible you may have damaged the connection point. Please reach out to the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.

Syed Rizvi says
Hello, I think my filter isn’t installed properly. The fridge is dispensing water even without it, however. What might the issue be?
Katie says
Sandra,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Our first recommendation would be to abide by the replacement instructions from the filter and refrigerator manufacturers. In addition to this, you may try relieving the pressure from the waterline. To do this, turn off the water supply to the refrigerator. Then, run the water dispenser for a few moments. This should help make the filter removal easier.
Katie says

Is there never any answers for a water filter that won’t release to be replaced other than be gentle or be firm? It won’t come out. I even called Frigidaire and their answer is call the store where it was bought by the builder of my home. The YouTube videos are easy, my filter won’t come out. Time for answers.

I change the water filter #2
But still says 11% how do I reset it
Katie says
Damon,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Some models are designed to function with or without a filter. It is unusual for the filter to be completely dry. Normally there is some evidence of water. There is usually water droplets in or around the connection site. Sometimes you can shake the filter and hear the water inside. If there are no signs that water is entering the filter, we would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator’s manufacturer for troubleshooting support.
Damon Harrison says
I have an LG model LFXS28596S. Less than 4mos old. My water dispenser works fine and so does the ice maker. But I noticed the filter is dry. Does not have water in it or drip water when removed. Have changed filter, verify cap is removed, made sure no broken connection or debris in filter housing. And it dispenses water with and without the filter installed. I thought dispenser wouldn’t work without the filter but this one does. What’s going on?
Katie says
Marilyn,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please review the installation instructions provided by the filter manufacturer. There may be an important step that is being missed. If you do not have those instructions we would be happy to research it for you. Please confirm the filter part number and/or the model number to the refrigerator.
Katie says
Sophy,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear that. Please inspect the filter and the insertion point on the refrigerator for any visible damage. If there is no physical damage that may explain the leak I would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for troubleshooting information. In the meantime, most refrigerator water supply lines have a valve on the wall where the water flow can be turned on and off. This will help isolate the water to the refrigerator while allowing you to have water throughout the rest of your home.
Katie says
Debbie,
Can you provide us with some more information so that we can better help you? Please let us know what brand your refrigerator is and the part number of the filter you are trying to install.
Debbie says
Can’t put the filter back in
Marilyn Steen says
The new water filter will not rotate up so I can close the door. I’m not sure the filter is in all the way. The filter plug will not lock in. What triggers the mechanism to roll so it can rotate up.
Sophy says
We installed the filter and water started gushing out! We had to turn off the main water line to our house and the manufacturer is closed due to Hurricane Dorian. Can anyone tell us what we can do to resolve??
Katie says
Cathy,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would first recommend reviewing the filter and refrigerator instructions to confirm the removal procedure. Depending on your model there may be specific steps needed in order to remove the filter. *In addition to this it may help to turn off the water supply to the refrigerator and then running the water dispenser. This action will reduce the pressure that may be preventing you from removing the filter.
Cathy Tuttle says
I have followed all of the instructions but my filter will not come out! Is there a secret!
Katie says
R A Hansen,
Did you reset your change filter light? Please consult your owners manual for proper instructions.
R A Hansen says
I just changed the filter but the “replace filter” sign is still flashing. What else do I need to do?
Katie says
Chuck,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend reviewing the owner’s manual for the refrigerator. Some models require shutting off the water supply before replacing the filter. If this is not required by your model, we would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for a possible solution. In the meantime, it may still help to shut off the water supply before running the dispenser to relieve the pressure. We hope this helps!
Katie says
Molly,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would first make sure there are no kinks in the waterline. If you have a water dispenser and it seems slow to produce you may need to give it more time. It can take an hour or so to fill the reservoir in the refrigerator and to chill the water inside. If this has been done and there are no improvements it is possible the filter may be defective. You can check the flow rate on the two filters to compare. All else being equal, filters with more advanced filtration produce water at a slower rate.
Katie says
Ann,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Since water is flowing properly through the dispenser it is possible there may be an issue with another component in your refrigerator. We would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer for troubleshooting support.
Chuck Cole says
I have a new Whirlpool French door refrigerator. The one with a drawer between the freezer and French doors. The water filter in in the upper right top corner. The first time I replaced the filter is was a disaster. The water supplying the filter did not shut off and wanter spewed our into the dining room at least 25ft. I just replaced it again, second time and it did the same thing but I was ready for it this time. I ran 1 gal of water out of the dispenser as was suggested to reduce pressure, but that did not work. This is a new refrigerator only 1.5 years old after purchase and professional install. What’s wrong!
Molly says
My son replaced the filter but the water comes out even slower than before with a humming noise. He tried adjusting it and clearing the line for several minutes. Still is slow. It’s a p55/50 filter.
Ann says
I replaced filter and now I’ve maker is not working. I am getting water through water dispenser. Any ideas?
Katie says

I removed the old filter and I tried to hook up th new filter and it does not locked inside came back with not locking
Tried again with the old filter and I did not work as well. I have my refrigerator without filter now. What shal be done to make th filter lock in?
Katie says
Jackie,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Some refrigerator water systems are not designed to function without a filter. Please inspect the filter head and the filter insertion point for obstructions or visible damage; if none; please reinstall the filter using the manufacturer’s instructions. It is possible the filter was not properly seated.
Jackie says
I have a samsung side by side refrigerator freezer, we opened the fridge and water came pouring out from where the filter was, filter had been in for 4 months with no issue, I pulled out the fridge turned off the water and removed the filter, when I turned the water back on without the filter in the water came pouring out, is there a seal inside that could have gone, I can’t see how to get into it.

Donna says
I have a whirlpool ED2kvexvq00 I have just replaced the filter and after a few cups of water there is a leak. HELP!!!
Linda says
The cap is missing on the filter area how do I remove filter if it is not there
Katie says
Bob,
Thank you for reaching out to us. In most cases, the water is routed from the water supply line in the wall, through a solenoid, through the filter, and then out to the dispenser and ice-maker. In this series, if the filter is defective, it will prevent water from reaching the dispenser or ice-maker. If the water dispenser and ice-maker were both operating as normal the filter should be have been performing its function as intended. We would recommend contacting the manufacturer of your refrigerator for any troubleshooting information.
Katie says
Lourdes,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please ensure there are no obstructions between the filter and the insertion point. Please ensure the filter is properly seated. We would be happy to research more specific instructions if you will confirm the part number for the filter and/or the model number to your refrigerator.
Katie says
Carol,
Thank you for reaching out to us. The filter for that model normally comes with a cap on the filter tip. Please ensure the cap is removed prior to insertion. If this does not help we would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer for troubleshooting information.
Katie says
Amrit,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend reviewing the filter and the insertion point for any possible obstructions. If there are none it is possible the filter receiver is damaged. We would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer for troubleshooting information.
Lourdes says

Ginger,
Thank you for reaching out to us. That may be the filter receiver. This is sometimes referred to as the filter housing. This is the component that the filter inserts into. We would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer to confirm.
Ginger says
Have Whirlpool side by side with push button for water filter. Push button does not respond like it did, very hard to push in water filter or remove it. When I do get it pushed in water in door dispenser trickles for a few seconds and then stops. Could push button be bad?
Katie says
Rosemary,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please remove the filter and reinstall to ensure proper installation. If your refrigerator has a water dispenser please try it. If it does not work please reach out to the vendor for a replacement filter. If you do not have a water dispenser please allow the ice maker 24-48 hours to make the first batch of ice. Please let us know if you need additional assistance.
Rosemary burdett says
My ice maker won’t work after replacing filter
Katie says
Randolph,
Thank you for sharing! We normally recommend the instructions below:
1. Turn Off the ice maker by raising the wire signal arm.
2. Remove the filter by pushing on the end/face of the filter.
3. Slide the old water filter cartridge straight out of the housing and discard it.
4. Using the alignment guide, slide it gently into the filter housing until it stops against the snap-in connector at the back of the housing.
5. Push firmly until the cartridge snaps into place (you should hear a click as the cartridge engages the snap-in connector).
6. Turn On the ice maker by lowering the wire signal arm.
7. Press and hold the Water Filter button on the Ice & Water Dispenser control panel for three seconds. When the display changes from Red to Green, the status has been reset (this may vary depending on model).
After replacing the water filter and in order for the ice maker to work properly, it is necessary to clear air from water filter tubing. Once ice maker begins making ice, allow the bucket to fill completely, then discard the first two full buckets of ice. It will take at least two days to completely fill the bucket on regular ice making mode or 1-1/2 days on fast ice mode.
Katie says
Ed,
Thank you for reaching out to us. That normally occurs when the filter is not fully seated.
Please see the installation instructions below:
1. Turn off the ice maker using the power switch
2. Press the filter release button adjacent to the old filter – discard the old filter
3. Push the new filter straight into the filter receiver until you hear a double-click *Please note, if it does not double-click it will not make a proper seal.
4. If you are having trouble pushing it in to click, please install with the face-plate off. After it is installed you may re-attach the face-plate.
5. Restore power to the ice maker
6. Reset the change water indicator using the instructions in your owner’s manual
Please advise whether this information was helpful.
Katie says
Gloria,
Thank you for reaching out to us. No, do not use this filter with a broken tip. That will eventually leak. Please reach out to the vendor for a replacement filter.
Katie says
Patty,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please remove the filter and reinstall it using the included instructions. Ensure there are no seals or caps preventing the filter from properly engaging. If you provide the part number of the filter and the model number to your refrigerator we can research more specific information.

No water will come out after I replaced the filter. ? I pressed the button numerous times and held it down for 3 minutes also. Nothing.

Hi Vicki,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Firstly, we would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer for technical support specific to your model. A suggestion that may help is to turn off the water supply to the refrigerator and running the water dispenser to relieve pressure. This should make the filter a bit easier to remove.
Katie says
Pam,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please review the installation instructions carefully. If the filter has a cap please remove this prior to installation. Some filters need to be in a particular orientation prior to turning. Usually, these will have a line or an arrow for alignment. If you need specific instructions please provide the part number of the filter and the model number to your refrigerator.
Vicki says
the button that is used to pop the filter out will not depressed. I’ve applied as much force as I am capable and it will not push. I took off the baseboard for better access but that did not help. Any thoughts?

Help,
I forgot to remove the cap from the filter before I installed it into my whirlpool refrigerator.
There was a small ‘explosive’ sound. I took out the new filter but don’t know how to get the stuck cap out of the fridge.

Thank you for reaching out to us. Please use the following installations instructions:
-Remove old filter cartridge by grasping and turning counter clockwise about 1/4 turn – Discard
-Push new filter in until it stops
-Turn the new filter 1/4 turn clockwise until it stops
-Flush new cartridge by dispensing water for about 5 minutes
-Replace cartridge once every 6 months
-Press and hold reset water filter button if your fridge has one
Please advise whether this information was helpful.

Hi David,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend reviewing the manufacturer’s installation instructions. That is normally included with the new filter and in the owner’s manual. If you do not have this available we would be happy to search that for you. Please provide the part number or model number to the refrigerator.

Hi Willie,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please review the installation instructions included with the filter. This filter has to be installed in a particular orientation. There is also a bold instruction not to twist the filter. If you have twisted the filter you may have broken the receiver. We would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.

Hi Vincent,
Thank you for reaching out to us. Please ensure the filter is properly flushed. Some filters may require dispensing up to 6 gallons. Once this has been done the water should be clear and taste great. If the chlorine taste persists please reach out to the vendor for a replacement filter.

Sonny,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to say that we do not see reference information for that. It may take some looking over to understand how it works mechanically. If that does not help we would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.
Katie says
Brian,
Thank you for reaching out to us. The filter we see for that application is part number EDR6D1 or 4396701. If the filter you are attempting to install is a replacement for either of those part numbers the filter should be correct. We would recommend using a flashlight to visually confirm whether a bypass plug is installed. The installations instructions for the new filter are as follows:
1. Locate filter in the grille near the bottom of your refrigerator
2. Push button firmly until filter pops out
3. Remove cap from the old filter by twisting counter-clockwise
4. Reinstall cap on new filter and remove plug from end of filter
5. Insert new filter in refrigerator and push in firmly until it clicks in place
If the instructions above do not help it is possible there is an issue with the receiver, water sending unit, or another component. For troubleshooting, we would recommend reaching out to a certified technician.

Good Morning..A friend of mine has a Kenmore top freezer refrigerator model 106.78222801 with the filter located in the grill on the bottom front..Every time I change the filter for her there is never any residual water in the old filter..The ice maker and water dispenser work perfectly whether there is a filter installed or not.I do not have the original filter for comparison..but suspect that I’m trying to install the wrong filter or there may have been a bypass plug or something installed from the factory that was never removed…in which case every filter that has been changed and discarded has been brand new….please help

Hi Gerri,
We would recommend removing the filter and visually confirming there are no obstructions on the filter itself. There should not be any ice preventing installation. Most filters come with caps covering the filter tips. Please remove those if applicable. Some filters need to be installed in a particular orientation. Please review the filter label and packaging for any special installation instructions.

I have a GE refrigerator, with the RPWFE filter. When I went to change the filter, not realizing that there were 2 different set of instructions, I followed what turned out to be the wrong set. I twisted (1/4 turn) the old filter to remove it. Then I realized that there were 2 different installation instructions. The unit that I have says repeatedly do not twist the filter, which I did. Now I can’t get the new filter in. What remedies do I have?

Hello Chris,
It may depend on the quality of your local water. Have you thought of getting your water test results from your county? They are free to the public and can help pinpoint contaminants that may cause the water to still taste bad.
Thank you,

My fridge is indeed quite old, and recently I’ve noticed that the water tasted quite unpleasant. Now I understand that the problem might be with my water filter, and I have no idea when it was repaired or replaced for the last time as I’ve just moved it here. I believe I will need to have a professional look at it and decide what should be done in this situation.
Heather says
My refrigerator had trouble with dispensing water properly when I first got it, but it didn’t take long to fix the issue. Making sure everything is in its proper place and going through this list of potential issues will ensure that you’re not struggling with your new appliance.
Ethan James says
The installation mistakes are really the basic thing which we get at the early stage, if we take care on that while at the starting stage then it will reduce our troubleshooting problem. You have mentioned different trouble shooting problem, its really interesting to know all these new things

After trying many different suggestions including all the above. Simply use a automobile oil filter wrench on your stuck frig filter. It came out instantly with absolutely no effort. SIMPLE. Works well on Samsung and other brands with filters that look like automotive filters located inside Frig.

Do you have Air Filters that will fit my Rikon 400 CFM Air Cleaner Model 62-400?
Kory says
What is the model number of the compatible filter you are currently using? This could help pinpoint any potential issues. If the filter has been replaced within the last 6 months, you should be fine, however water quality plays a factor as well. It could also be a defective filter that was purchased.
Kory says
It sounds like there could be water pressure in the line that is preventing you from locking the new filter in place. Was there a splash of water when you first removed the old filter?
Ray says
I have an LG refrigerator for which I have to buy water filters that are “compatible” after- market replacements for the original design (LG5231JA2006). Since I started using these after-market filters, I no longer hear water entering the new filter at installation and I don’t feel any weight difference due to water between used filters and new ones. My water doesn’t taste any different between the tap and the “filtered” refrigerator. Any ideas.
curt says
When changing my waterfilter the new filter will not stay locked in place. I tried reinstalling the old filter and that one would not lock into place either. I now have a wedge holding the filter in place. Any tips? My refridgerator model is FPHS2387KF. The water filter is a ULTRAWF.

Hi Kent, what is the make and model of the refrigerator?
Kent Zaitz says
After I replace a filter, and activate the dispenser, it will not shut off until I shut off the shut-off valve in the line. Once I reopen the shut-off valve then the door dispenser works correctly. Now I always have someone at the valve to shut it off so I don’t end up with water everywhere coming from the dispenser. Why does the door dispenser stick on after a filter change?
Thank you

I usually find trouble removing the old filter when it won’t budge with force. Best remedy I found, is to use a hair dryer pointed at the installation point for about 60 seconds. It works every time!
Drew says
Thank you for this! I’m always afraid that I’m going to break something when I have to jam my water filter in place. I just needed to be less delicate with it.
Kory says
Hi Jim, what is the model number of the filter you purchased?
Jim says
I have purchased your filters in the past for my GE refrigerator. Installation was generally easy. However, water flow never occurred. Error message on refrigerator indicates a non GE filter is installed and therefore doesn’t work.
I have stopped using the ice maker and water dispenser because of the rediculuous cost of GE filters. Any suggestions and I will purchase your filters again.
