Troubleshooting Tips: How to Change Your Refrigerator Filter

Published May 8, 2025 by Kory 201 Comments

troubleshooting tips for refrigerators

Changing your refrigerator water filter should be relatively easy, but that doesn’t mean it can’t come with challenges. Here are some common problems when replacing your refrigerator water filter. We will also explain how to fix each one with this easy-to-follow troubleshooting guide.

Refrigerator filters are vital to ensuring that you can enjoy fresh, filtered water straight from your fridge. Fridge filters are an excellent solution to improve the taste or odor of your water. Refrigerator water filters with an NSF 53 certification can also help reduce contaminants like lead, mercury, and VOCs.

For optimum results, experts recommend replacing the filters at least every 6 months.

Time to order a replacement water filter for your fridge?

Find Your Filter

Refrigerator filters are not one-size-fits-all. They are designed to fit your refrigerator model, so finding the right filter is paramount.

How do I know which fridge filter I need?

With Filters Fast’s easy-to-use Filter Finder Tool, you can easily determine your desired filter.

You’ll need to answer a few questions, so make sure you know:

  • Your fridge brand (Ex. LG, GE, Whirlpool, etc.)
  • Style of fridge you have (Ex. Bottom freezer, French 3-Door, Side by Side, etc)
  • Where your fridge filter is located
  • How the filter is removed

You can also locate your filter in one of two ways:

  • Search your fridge model; you should be able to find the model number on a sticker inside your fridge.
  • Find the part number for your filter, which is located on the filter, and search for that number.

Common Refrigerator Water Filter Installation Mistakes

Let’s start with common mistakes that could cause the installation of your new fridge filter to go less than smoothly:

  1. Protective caps have not been removed from your new filter. Before installing your new refrigerator filter, remember to remove any protective caps from it.
  2. Failure to flush the filter. This helps work out any loose media in the filter and ensures no air bubbles in the water line. Check out our blog about how to flush your refrigerator for more details.
  3. Throwing away the reusable knob. For base-grill filters, don’t throw away the reusable knob, you may need it later!

A woman is filling a glass with filtered water from a refrigerator after troubleshooting
If none of the above are the issues, here are a few troubleshooting techniques based on the problem you’re encountering.

The water is not dispensing after replacing the water filter.

Reinstall the old filter. If water comes from the old filter and not the new one, there is an installation problem with the new one. If water does not come out of the old or new filter, the water valve is the problem.

Small drip or leak after installing the new refrigerator water filter

Remove the fridge filter and re-fit it into the refrigerator with a sharp twist to lock into position.

Water flow is irregular.

This likely means that there is still air in the water lines. Press down the dispenser lever for 2 minutes until the water starts to flow freely.

Difficulty with removing or installing the refrigerator water filter

There is no secret to this– sometimes all that is needed is a little extra force. For removal, the problem is sometimes pulling the filter down and out. Try rocking the filter sideways while pulling down; this should work.

You can also try removing the top shelf from the refrigerator, as its sudden release could damage it. For installation, apply more force and keep turning to lock it into position.

Water tastes different after installing the new filter

Refrigerator water filters do not affect the taste of water; they only remove chemicals and contaminants.

The older the fridge filter is that you are replacing, the more likely you are to notice a taste difference as your drinking water is now under greater (and more effective) filtration than it had been.

The water filter appears to be clogged, before it’s time to be replaced.

Depending on water quality and usage, your refrigerator water filter may not last the whole 6 months. If your water flow starts to slow, it could be clogged and needs replacing.

Of course, suppose you have experienced a sudden drop in water quality, possibly caused by several factors/situations. In that case, it is best to determine what is wrong by conducting a home water test. You can do this yourself, or have your municipal water source supply you with the information.

The refrigerator is not dispensing water or ice.

If your refrigerator’s water and ice dispenser does not appear to be working, it could be due to a malfunctioning door switch.

The door switch in a refrigerator is a vital component in ensuring that water dispensing works safely and properly. If you find that the dispenser is not working, inspect the door switch. This switch should be located on the door where the dispenser is. If the switch is stuck, try dislodging it. If that doesn’t do the trick, it may need to be repaired or replaced.

The refrigerator is making a loud jackhammer or humming noise.

If your refrigerator makes a loud jackhammer noise, it may mean the water filter is malfunctioning. This noise occurs when the water supply is interrupted or obstructed.

You can try the following to troubleshoot this issue:

  • Check filter installation to ensure that it has been installed correctly and securely.
  • Check for clogs and replace the filter frequently to prevent debris buildup.
  • Bypass the filter. If all else fails, you can use a bypass plug to eliminate the filter and test whether the sound persists. This method can help better diagnose the source of the problem.

The refrigerator water dispenser only works when the kitchen faucet is running.

This may mean one of the following:

  • Your refrigerator and faucet are operating on a shared water line pressure
  • Lines are clogged or restricted
  • You have a faulty water inlet valve

Here’s what you can do to try to resolve the issue:

  • Check the water line for kinks or blockages.
  • Inspect the pressure regulator and adjust or replace it if needed.
  • Examine the inlet valve to ensure it’s functioning correctly.

If the issue persists, you may want to seek professional help.

woman look at fridge with concern

The anti-flood valve is causing water supply issues.

If you have an anti-flood valve, it can unintentionally halt the water supply. This is a common issue after changing a water filter. To troubleshoot this issue, you can disconnect the water supply at the shut-off valve to reset the anti-flood valve.

Frozen water tube

Suspect that your refrigerator’s water tube is frozen? Here’s what you can do.

  • Check the connection points at the top and bottom of the refrigerator door.
  • Test the airflow by carefully disconnecting the hose from the dispenser. Blow air through the tube towards the dispenser, and the air flows freely, not frozen. If no air pushes through, it’s likely frozen.
  • Once you’ve confirmed that the water tube is frozen, carefully remove it and allow it to thaw.
  • Adjusting your freezer’s temperature can prevent future freezing. The ideal freezer temperature should be between 0 and 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do RFID tags on water filters impact functionality?

What is an RFID tag?

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, a newer technology embedded in most new appliances. This tiny device is intended to communicate with the appliance, ensuring that only compatible components are used.

How do RFID tags affect water filters?

RFID tags can significantly impact your appliance’s functionality, which means using filters without an RFID tag may cause you to run into some issues. This may restrict you from using filters with the necessary RFID tags.

In summary, checking and seeing if your refrigerator requires filters with RFID tags is essential. This is also something to consider before purchasing the appliance.

Can unplugging the refrigerator solve water filter issues?

Unplugging your refrigerator for about 30 seconds may resolve any water filter issues you may be experiencing. Doing so can clear system conflicts, restore settings, or force the system to recheck installed components.

If this issue persists after unplugging your appliance, the problem you’re experiencing may require further investigation.

    Al,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for the replacement filter housing. That part is not generally considered a DIY replacement. It may be best to have a technician perform the service. Thank you for your consideration.

    Randy,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We recommend using the manufacturer’s instructions to removing and reinstall the filter. After that we would suggest wiping down the filter to remove any water drops. There should not be any water drops afterwards. If so, there may be an issue with the filter or the insertion point on the refrigerator. For technical support we would recommend reaching out to GE directly.

When I install my new fridge filter, it slowly dispenses about 4 ounces of water before completely stopping. When I install the old filter, it works fine. Thinking it was a bad filter, I ordered two more and they’re both doing the same thing. Any advice on how I can fix this?

    Bernadette,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend reviewing the manufacturer’s filter replacement instructions; filter removal is normally the reverse. We agree channel locks should not be necessary. We would recommend inspecting the filter insertion point. We want to make sure there are no obstructions or damage to the filter housing. If none of that is present, we would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for troubleshooting support. Note, some refrigerators can function without a filter, but we generally would not recommend that.

    May 6, 2020 at 1:35 pm

    Daniel,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Please remove the filter. Inspect the tip of the filter and the insertion point in the refrigerator for any possible obstructions. Reinstall using the manufacturer’s instructions, and ensure a proper seal is made. Flush the filter by running the water dispenser. This should reduce any air trapped in the water lines. If this does not help it is possible the filter may be defective. If that is the case please reach out to the vendor directly for a replacement.

I replaced the filter when the light cans on and threw away the old one. The new one will not Lock into place, but it turned into place and it seemed to be snug so I figured it was fine. Nope! Water everywhere within a day.

I bought another filter (exact same model and LG brand) and the same thing is happening. It will not lock into place and it leaks water everywhere.

The prior filter came out in tact without issues. I have no idea why the new filter(s) won’t snap in place.

Also, I turned off the water and cleared the line. I double checked the make sure I have the correct filter with the manufacturer and I do.

Any suggestions ?!? I sure hope so :0(

Thank you for reaching out to us. There are several different things that could cause that. Normally, if the filter is defective it will not function from the onset. We would recommend removing the filter and reinstalling it. If there is no change, we would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.

    Lisa,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Depending on the application there could be two different types of caps. One is a disposable cap used to protect the prong(s) of the filter. The other is a reusable cap that attaches the back of the filter and is used like a knob. We would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer of your refrigerator for technical support.

Thank you for reaching out to us. The closest reference we see is part number RPWFE. Please review the installation instructions carefully. This should be included with the new filter cartridge. There are specific instructions for alignment and insertion (link from GE copied below). There is an emphatic warning against turning the cartridge. If you have turned the cartridge it is possible you may have damaged the connection point. Please reach out to the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.

Thank you for reaching out to us. Our first recommendation would be to abide by the replacement instructions from the filter and refrigerator manufacturers. In addition to this, you may try relieving the pressure from the waterline. To do this, turn off the water supply to the refrigerator. Then, run the water dispenser for a few moments. This should help make the filter removal easier.

    Damon,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Some models are designed to function with or without a filter. It is unusual for the filter to be completely dry. Normally there is some evidence of water. There is usually water droplets in or around the connection site. Sometimes you can shake the filter and hear the water inside. If there are no signs that water is entering the filter, we would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator’s manufacturer for troubleshooting support.

Have changed filter, verify cap is removed, made sure no broken connection or debris in filter housing. And it dispenses water with and without the filter installed. Marilyn,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Please review the installation instructions provided by the filter manufacturer. There may be an important step that is being missed. Sophy,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear that. Please inspect the filter and the insertion point on the refrigerator for any visible damage. If there is no physical damage that may explain the leak I would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for troubleshooting information. In the meantime, most refrigerator water supply lines have a valve on the wall where the water flow can be turned on and off. This will help isolate the water to the refrigerator while allowing you to have water throughout the rest of your home.

    Cathy,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We would first recommend reviewing the filter and refrigerator instructions to confirm the removal procedure. Depending on your model there may be specific steps needed in order to remove the filter. *In addition to this it may help to turn off the water supply to the refrigerator and then running the water dispenser. This action will reduce the pressure that may be preventing you from removing the filter.

    Chuck,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend reviewing the owner’s manual for the refrigerator. Some models require shutting off the water supply before replacing the filter. If this is not required by your model, we would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for a possible solution. In the meantime, it may still help to shut off the water supply before running the dispenser to relieve the pressure. We hope this helps!

  85. Katie says

    August 19, 2019 at 4:27 pm

    Molly,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We would first make sure there are no kinks in the waterline. If you have a water dispenser and it seems slow to produce you may need to give it more time. It can take an hour or so to fill the reservoir in the refrigerator and to chill the water inside. If this has been done and there are no improvements it is possible the filter may be defective. You can check the flow rate on the two filters to compare. All else being equal, filters with more advanced filtration produce water at a slower rate.

  86. Katie says

    August 19, 2019 at 4:26 pm

    Ann,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Since water is flowing properly through the dispenser it is possible there may be an issue with another component in your refrigerator. We would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer for troubleshooting support.

    Bob,

Thank you for reaching out to us. In most cases, the water is routed from the water supply line in the wall, through a solenoid, through the filter, and then out to the dispenser and ice-maker. In this series, if the filter is defective, it will prevent water from reaching the dispenser or ice-maker. If the water dispenser and ice-maker were both operating as normal the filter should be have been performing its function as intended. We would recommend contacting the manufacturer of your refrigerator for any troubleshooting information.

    Randolph,

Thank you for sharing! We normally recommend the instructions below:

    1. Turn Off the ice maker by raising the wire signal arm.
    2. Remove the filter by pushing on the end/face of the filter.
    3. Slide the old water filter cartridge straight out of the housing and discard it.
    4. Using the alignment guide, slide it gently into the filter housing until it stops against the snap-in connector at the back of the housing.
    5. Push firmly until the cartridge snaps into place (you should hear a click as the cartridge engages the snap-in connector).
    6. Turn On the ice maker by lowering the wire signal arm.
    7. Press and hold the Water Filter button on the Ice & Water Dispenser control panel for three seconds. When the display changes from Red to Green, the status has been reset (this may vary depending on model).

After replacing the water filter and in order for the ice maker to work properly, it is necessary to clear air from water filter tubing. Once ice maker begins making ice, allow the bucket to fill completely, then discard the first two full buckets of ice. It will take at least two days to completely fill the bucket on regular ice making mode or 1-1/2 days on fast ice mode.

    3. Push the new filter straight into the filter receiver until you hear a double-click *Please note, if it does not double-click it will not make a proper seal.
    4. If you are having trouble pushing it in to click, please install with the face-plate off. After it is installed you may re-attach the face-plate.
    5. Restore power to the ice maker
    6. Reset the change water indicator using the instructions in your owner’s manual

    Hi David,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend reviewing the manufacturer’s installation instructions. That is normally included with the new filter and in the owner’s manual. If you do not have this available we would be happy to search that for you. Please provide the part number or model number to the refrigerator.

    Hi Willie,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Please review the installation instructions included with the filter. This filter has to be installed in a particular orientation. There is also a bold instruction not to twist the filter. If you have twisted the filter you may have broken the receiver. We would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.

    Hi Vincent,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Please ensure the filter is properly flushed. Some filters may require dispensing up to 6 gallons. Once this has been done the water should be clear and taste great. If the chlorine taste persists please reach out to the vendor for a replacement filter.

Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to say that we do not see reference information for that. It may take some looking over to understand how it works mechanically. If that does not help we would recommend contacting the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.

    Brian,

Thank you for reaching out to us. The filter we see for that application is part number EDR6D1 or 4396701. If the filter you are attempting to install is a replacement for either of those part numbers the filter should be correct. We would recommend using a flashlight to visually confirm whether a bypass plug is installed. The installations instructions for the new filter are as follows:

    1. Locate filter in the grille near the bottom of your refrigerator

    2. Push button firmly until filter pops out

    3. Remove cap from the old filter by twisting counter-clockwise

    4. Reinstall cap on new filter and remove plug from end of filter

    5. Insert new filter in refrigerator and push in firmly until it clicks in place

If the instructions above do not help it is possible there is an issue with the receiver, water sending unit, or another component. For troubleshooting, we would recommend reaching out to a certified technician.

    Hi Gerri,

We would recommend removing the filter and visually confirming there are no obstructions on the filter itself. There should not be any ice preventing installation.
