ZeroWater Filter Guide: Remove Contaminants Safely!

Published February 21, 2025 by Brandon Leave a Comment

Being concerned about your water quality is natural. Water is a vital part of our lives, essential to our health and well-being. If you’ve invested in or are curious about a ZeroWater filter, you may have questions about what it removes. Let’s discuss this important subject.

What chemicals does a ZeroWater filter remove?

Chemicals may be a significant concern when it comes to drinking water. Fortunately, ZeroWater filters can remove critical chemicals, including cyanide, fluoride, lead, pesticides, nitrate, and chlorine.

What type of contaminants does a ZeroWater Filter remove?

Powered by their patented Ion Exchange Technology, ZeroWater filters extract contaminants from your water. Some include inorganic non-metals such as chlorine and cyanide, heavy metals such as lead, mercury, and chromium, and dissolved solids like magnesium, nitrate, and calcium. These organic and inorganic substances are also known as TDS.

What is TDS in water?

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) stands for Total Dissolved Solids. TDS is the measurement of dissolved substances like minerals and organic compounds.

TDS can include calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, sulfate, nitrate, and other anions.

What are anions, and how do they relate to water filtration? Anions are a term for compounds that have a negative charge. Anions include sulfate, chloride, and carbonate. Cations are another term frequently used to describe substances with a positive charge, like calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium.

What TDS Levels are Safe for Drinking Water?

If your water has a high TDS, it does not necessarily mean it is unsafe to drink. Levels of around 50-150 ppm TDS are considered safe. However, if you have a TDS level of 500 ppm or more, this could indicate a serious water issue.

High TDS levels can impact your water’s appearance, odor, and taste.

What are the Health Risks of Drinking Water with High TDS levels?

If your water has a high TDS level, you may wonder how it’s impacting your health. TDS is the combination of organic and inorganic substances in your water. Some of these substances are what your body needs, like calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium.

No scientific evidence suggests high TDS levels are connected to adverse health effects. However, if you have cause for concern that something in your water is impacting your health, take action immediately.

How Does ZeroWater’s Ion Exchange Layer Work?

ZeroWater’s patented Ion Exchange Technology reduces TDS in water to zero. This process swaps the unwanted cations and anions in tap water for harmless ions, typically hydrogen and hydroxide.

The Ion Exchange later will effectively perform this process until all of the ions, both H* or OH-, are used up. You may notice a sour taste when the hydroxyl ions have been spent.

ZeroWater filters strip water of dissolved solids, leaving you with the purest tasting water each time you refill.

What is the problem with a ZeroWater filter?

One of the main issues people have with ZeroWater filters is that they remove most dissolved solids from water, including essential minerals like magnesium and calcium. This can affect the taste, which is a commonly made complaint.

Another issue with a ZeroWater filter is the water’s strangely sour or lemony taste. This indicates that the ion exchange resin is not working effectively and can no longer replace the unwanted ions in the water.

This layer’s depletion happens over time, can lead to a sour or acidic taste, and is a sign that your filter needs to be replaced. Using the filter beyond this point means it is not effectively removing dissolved solids. If the TDS meter indicates levels of 006 or higher, you need to replace the filter.

Do ZeroWater filters remove microplastics?

ZeroWater filters significantly reduce up to 99% of microplastics in tap water. This is excellent news for those concerned about this particular contaminant’s recent rise. If you’re worried about the possibility of microplastics being in your water, it’s recommended that you get it tested by a certified laboratory.

Does ZeroWater Filter Remove Fluoride?

The short answer is yes: ZeroWater water filters effectively remove fluoride from tap water. Using the patented 5-step system, this filter can remove up to 99% of the contaminant. If you’re asking this question, you may wonder why fluoride is included in your water source. Some cities add it to the supply to help fight tooth decay.

Although this is a decent benefit, ingesting too much Fluoride can cause more concerning side effects, such as skeletal fluorosis. This can lead to pain and fractures in your bones.

Does ZeroWater get rid of bacteria?

Unfortunately, although ZeroWater water filters effectively eliminate most contaminants, they do not remove bacteria from drinking water.

If you’re interested in this level of filtration, a Reverse Osmosis water filtration system can accomplish this goal. RO Water Filter systems effectively remove standard contaminants, including bacteria, at a 99% rate.

Another option for removing bacteria from your drinking water is an ultraviolet water filtration system. These systems are also very efficient at reducing bacteria, but at a slightly higher rate than an RO water filter system. UV Water Filtration Systems remove bacteria up to 99.99%.

How Long Do ZeroWater Filters Last?

Typically, most filters will last 20 – 40 gallons of use before requiring a replacement. However, this can vary depending on two factors: water consumption and the TDS of the water.

How often should a ZeroWater filter be replaced?

Water quality significantly impacts the life of a ZeroWater filter. If the tap water has a TDS of around 100, the filter may only process 15-18 gallons of water before needing to be replaced. For TDS levels exceeding 700, the filter can only treat about 5 gallons before replacement.

Eventually, your filter will give you clear signs that it’s time to replace it. Those signs are a lousy taste or smell. If you still question whether it’s time to change your filter, you can also use a TDS meter to test the quality of the water. If it reads 006 or higher, you’ll know a replacement is in order.

How Many PFAS does ZeroWater water faucet filter remove?

Backed by NSF certification, ZeroWater can reduce your water PFAS (poly-fluoroalkyl substances) by up to 94.9%. PFAS are also known as ‘forever chemicals’ because they are highly durable and hard to destroy.

Are compatible water filters safe to use for my ZeroWater Filter system?

A ZeroWater filter replacement can be troubling if you want to evaluate all your options. You’ll want to make sure that the following factors cover the filter you’re considering:

Certification

Guaranteeing that your filter is certified by an official organization like NSF will ease your worries because you’ll know the performance is ensured.

Transparency

Finding out if your filter comes with an information/installation manual can be informative. It will give you an idea about how it may perform.

Customer Feedback

Researching and seeing other customers’ views will allow you to see any performance issues it has.

How often should I replace my filter?

Replacing your filter is extremely important. Neglecting this task will eventually clog your filter and deplete the ion exchange layer, making it a haven for hazardous contaminants. This can have adverse effects, such as impacting your health. Although most filters will last anywhere from a month to three months, paying attention to any changes in your water quality is essential to discern when replacement is needed.

If you’re looking for quality, compatible water filters, our Filters Fast® brand is trustworthy and reliable. They’re NSF-certified and will remove 99.6% of all dissolved solids.

How Do Alternative Filtration Options Compare to Pitcher-Style Filters?

Cost is one of the most significant considerations when investing in water filtration. One must consider the up-front cost and the cost to maintain it.

If removing TDS is your priority, distillation and reverse osmosis are two other effective options you should explore. Here’s how they compare:

ZeroWater pitchers are inexpensive, easy to use, and maintain. However, they require frequent filter changes and have limited capacity. This option is best for everyday use.

Reverse osmosis systems have a higher upfront cost but are highly effective at removing contaminants. Maintenance can also become quite expensive and produce water waste. They are best for households with water quality issues.

Disinfection systems can be expensive, but are extremely easy to maintain as they require no filters. One of the main things to consider is that distillers use a lot of electricity and will need time to perform the process. They are best for occasional use.

Enjoy Sipping Quality, Clean Water Every Time

Drinking clear, crisp water is vital to your health and wellness. Worrying about whether you’re getting that can be eased with a ZeroWater Filter. By ensuring that you replace your filter consistently, you’ll enjoy the positive effects that hydration with filtered water can bring every time.
