How to Reset Your Refrigerator Filter Indicator Light

Published June 3, 2006 by Ray 522 Comments

It’s that time again – that pesky refrigerator filter indicator light is bugging you to change your fridge’s water filter.

How To Find The Right Refrigerator Filter

First, you need to ensure you have the right fridge filter. Refrigerator filters are not universal. The location of the filter and the type of filter you need depend on the brand and model. How you change it will also be exclusive to your fridge. Need help finding the right fridge filter? Use our Filter Finder Tool to find the one that you need.

Find Your Refrigerator Filter

Here’s a short video to show you how it works.

What benefits do refrigerator water filters provide?

If your refrigerator has a water dispenser, this is a convenient and cost-effective water filtration option. Refrigerator water filters are available in different certifications that indicate what contaminants they will reduce.

  • NSF42: Validate claims that the filter will affect taste, odor, color, and other aesthetic effects, including reducing chlorine and particulate matter will be reduced.
  • NSF53: In addition to taste, odor, color, and other aesthetic effects, this certification validates claims that the filter will reduce contaminants considered potential health hazards, such as microbiological, chemical, or particulate (cysts) in nature, will be reduced.

Please read our blog to learn more about NSF Standards.

A refrigerator water filter with an NSF certification will improve water quality. However, choosing a good filter is not enough; you must also commit to regularly changing the filter. Refrigerator water filters should be changed every six months to ensure the best quality water.

How to Install a Refrigerator Filter

How to install a refrigerator filter will differ depending on the make and model of the refrigerator and the type of filter. For exact instructions, consult your owner’s manual or the instructions included with your filter.

Installing your filter incorrectly can void your refrigerator’s warranty and damage the filter housing.

You can check out our blog for troubleshooting tips for installing your fridge filter.

How to Reset Your Refrigerator Water Filter Change Light

The filter indicator light notifies you when it’s time to change the water filter. However, this light does not automatically reset when you replace the water filter, so you must manually reset it.

For most refrigerators, the filter change light is on a timer that lasts 6-18 months. The change filter light does not indicate the quality of your filter. We recommend changing your refrigerator filter at least every 6 months to ensure you always have purified, great-tasting water.

Here is a list of how to reset the water filter light based on your refrigerator’s manufacturer:

  • Amana Refrigerator: Press and hold the Auto and Dispenser Lock buttons until the water filter status indicator light flashes.
  • Frigidaire Refrigerator: Press the Options button until all the options show, then scroll to the water filter and hold the set button to reset it. Do the same for the refrigerator air filter.
  • General Electric or GE Refrigerator: Press and hold the Reset Button for at least 8 Seconds.
  • HotPoint Refrigerator: Press and hold the Reset Button for at least 8 Seconds.
  • Jenn-Air Refrigerator: Press and hold the Water and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
  • KitchenAid Refrigerator: Press and release the Light Button 5 times quickly.
  • Maytag Refrigerator: Press and hold the Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
  • Samsung Refrigerator: Press and hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds.
  • Whirlpool Refrigerator: Press and release the Light Button 5 times quickly.

Suppose your refrigerator’s brand is not listed or the instructions don’t work for your model. In that case, we recommend checking the instructions in your refrigerator’s owner’s manual or searching it on the manufacturer’s website.

How to Flush Your Refrigerator Filter

Refrigerator water filters are made of carbon media; some carbon dust will likely be in your water the first few times you dispense it.

Is drinking carbon dust terrible for you? Drinking carbon flecks will not harm you but make your water taste bitter. If you continue seeing carbon floating in your water after flushing a few gallons through the filter, you may have a defective filter.

woman getting water out of fridge

Check out our blog post for more tips on flushing your refrigerator water filter.

What if your refrigerator water filter doesn’t have a change filter light?

If your refrigerator is not equipped with a change filter indicator light, here’s what you can do.

Set a reminder to change your filter every 6 months.

What if there is water dripping immediately after dispensing?

You do not need to be alarmed if you notice water dripping shortly after dispensing. After you have installed the new filter, there are most likely air bubbles in the water line that can cause drippage. If you continue to notice dripping water, this could be a sign that your water lines are clogged, need to be replaced, or have a more serious problem.

Clogged Filter? Here’s What to Do.

If you suspect that your filter is clogged, you can remove it. You do not have to have a filter installed to use the water dispenser on your fridge. Removing the filter will automatically switch it into bypass mode, and you can still use the dispenser. Remember, using the refrigerator without a filter means your water will not be filtered. Use at your discretion.

What if your refrigerator water filter doesn’t have a change filter light?

If your refrigerator is not equipped with a change filter indicator light, here’s what you can do:

  • If you notice a decrease in water flow or your water isn’t coming out as cold as usual, these could be signs that it’s time to change your water filter.
  • Set a reminder to change your filter every 6 months.
  • Sign up for our Home Filter Club subscription! Our refrigerator filter subscription service allows you to have your fridge filter delivered to your door when it needs to be changed. You can save up to 10% off and get free shipping on each order! What’s not to love?

    Penny,

Thank you for reaching out to us about this. We recommend consulting your user manual for instructions on how to reset your water filter. However, we did find some information on the LG website. It says “After replacing the water filter, press and hold the water filter button for three seconds to turn the icon light off. Please let us know if you have any other questions!

    The following instructions are related:
After the filter cartridge has been changed, press and hold the FILTER RESET Touch Pad for
    10-15 seconds.

NOTE: The Green, Red and Amber lights will flash when reset is completed.

    Melanie,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Different models may have different reset procedures. Most models have a dedicated reset button. If you press and hold, it should flash the lights indicating it has reset. If it does not have a dedicated button there may be a combination of keys for that function. The key combination for resetting is normally labeled as such. If this does not help please provide your model number, and we would be happy to search that for you.

    Dawn,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to say we do not show a match for that reference number. Many refrigerators have a dedicated reset button. It is usually labeled as such. Other units use a combination of keys to reset. Those too are normally labeled for that function. If that is not available, we would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer for technical support.

    C,

Thank you for reaching out to us. The new filter is typically lighter. The old filter will have residual water and possible sediment build up making it heavier.
Most refrigerators have a dedicated reset button. If one is not found you may need to press a combination of keys to reset; those are normally labeled for this function. If you would provide the model number to your refrigerator we would be happy to research that for you.

  30. Katie says

    LOVETTE Galbreath,

Thank you for reaching out to us. The recommended replacement interval of 6 months is the maximum time frame. Depending on the water quality you may need to replace the filter sooner. We have had some customers that need to replace a filter as soon as one month after installation. We would recommend having your drinking water tested. Installing a whole-house pre-filter will help extend the capacity of any filters downstream.

  31. LOVETTE Galbreath says

    January 2, 2020 at 6:02 pm

I replaced my filter less than 90 days the water pressure drop when using the water on the outside of the refrigerator. I replace the filter again and it work fine. Do this mean the water filter is bad? I do not use a lot of water for the filter to go bad before 6 months. My original one last about a year and a half.

Thank you for reaching out to us. We recommend reviewing the owner’s manual for your refrigerator model. Each model has it’s own reset instructions. Many times there is a single reset button. Some units require pressing a combination of keys to reset. The reset button(s) is normally labeled as such.

    Hi Kathleen,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We would recommend removing the filter and confirming there aren’t any plastic seals or caps on the filter. The filter is usually wet indicating water is flowing through it. For additional support, we would recommend reaching out the manufacturer of your refrigerator.

    Hi Erma,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Yes, it seems the light has been successfully reset. The light is usually on a timer and should turn on in 6 months. If you would like to make sure please refer to the reset instructions in your owner’s manual. If you do not have that available we can research it using the model number to your refrigerator.

  66. Katie says

    March 11, 2019 at 4:17 pm

    Kathy,

For refrigerators with dedicated reset buttons, there are two common processes. One is a press and hold process that resets the light. The other is one where you press the reset button multiple times in quick succession within a few seconds. We would be happy to research the process for your unit if you will confirm the complete model number.

    Robert,

Thank you for reaching out to us. The filter reset instructions may differ model-to-model. Most refrigerators have a dedicated reset button. For those, you normally press and hold until the light flashes. Others have a combination of keys to press. Those are normally labeled for this function. We would recommend reviewing your owner’s manual to verify. If you do have that available please reach out to the manufacturer of your unit to confirm.

    Hi Bonnie,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Filters typically do not affect the refrigerator’s on/off cycles. That function is mostly a response to the temperature the refrigerator is set to. Perhaps the temperature was accidentally lowered during installation. For additional assistance, we would recommend reaching out to the refrigerator manufacturer.

  71. Katie says

    February 15, 2019 at 10:55 am

    Hi Cathy,

Thank you for reaching out to us. Water that goes through the filter is typically routed to both the dispenser and ice maker. We would recommend removing the filter and reinstalling it using the manufacturer’s instructions. If you have the old filter you may install it to see if the problem persists. If so, the issue may be with the water sending unit also known as the water valve. We would recommend reaching out to the manufacturer for technical support.

    Hi Bridget,

The filter change indicator light is normally on a timer. These have to be manually reset. The reset instructions for GE are “Press and Hold the Reset Button for around 8 Seconds.” If this does not apply to your model we would recommend reviewing the owner’s manual to confirm the reset instructions.

  73. Katie says

    Hi Michelle,

If your model is equipped with a water filter indicator on the display, press and hold the FILTER button or RESET button for approximately 5 seconds to reset the filter indicator. If this does not apply to your model we would recommend reviewing the owner’s manual to confirm the reset instructions.

One step was left out of these instructions. You have to be using the water output WHILE pushing the replace filter control until it changes to green.

    I have a Maytag MSD2572VEW refrig.

    Question:

What determines the need to replace the built in water filter. Time or gallons?

Time seems to be arbitrary as different people/families use different amounts of water.

Gallons? I have noticed that the replacement water filters come in 300 gallon, 700 gallon and 750 gallon sizes. What is the fridge set for? and can it be altered?

Will a power outage automatically reset the water filter light back to green if it has been red or does it always need to be manually reset? I have a Whirlpool side-by-side and the water filter light has been red for a while. My apartment maintenance said not to worry about it since I do not use the water from the fridge. Recently, I noticed the light was green again and maintenance said they did not come in. They are telling me perhaps a power outage reset the light. Is this possible? Thank you for your time.

Press and hold the Water Filter button on the Ice & Water Dispenser control panel for 3 seconds. When the display changes from Red to Green, the status has been reset. If it still is not working then there may be a timing issue within the refrigerator. However, the change light does not effect the filter inside of the refrigerator. It should still be replaced in 6 months.

Hi Heidi, Press and hold the LIGHT and LOCK pads for approximately 3 seconds until the CHANGE FILTER light blinks. It could be that the light and lock button were not held quite long enough. If that still doesn’t work, then there may be an internal issue going on. There may be troubleshooting information on it in the owners manual of the refrigerator. However, this will not impact the quality of the filter inside of the refrigerator.

I bought my brand new GE GFE28HSHSS six months ago. I was prompted to replace water filter, so I did. You say to hold the reset button after installing new water filter. Well, there doesn’tt seem to be a reset button. The manual provided with that model doesn’t show MY refrigerator’s actual led control pad. On mine, there is no reset button like the one they show, nor any other different type of led display that reveals “reset”. Touching the screen in various places doesn’t help. Maybe mine is the latest model of the model, and there is further, newer info? I tried resetting the new filter by using some prompts given for other brands, several times. I also tried unplugging, waiting, replugging the whole fridge. NO MATTER WHAT, when I choose “water” and then push water valve to dispense water, it says “Replace water filter–Dispenser Off.” What is the trick for MY fridge? Thanks for any help. I could send you a photo of my fridge?

Reene I too have a Samsung side by side and the ice maker was set up. The filter light too has stayed on, it’s blue, the same color as the water indicator. I think there must be a fuse that has stopped functioning. I know the water is OK because I change the filter when the date comes due. Reading Consumer Report, I believe this might be a common problem with this type of refrigerator. No intention of paying $100 for someone to diagnose then charge to come back with a fuse that will go out again. However, I will admit it is annoying. Barbara

Hi Patti, unfortunately it seems like there is an internal error that is causing the light to not go off. If the manual states that holding the filter button for three seconds will reset the light, there is no other method for doing it on this particular model. The good news is that the light being on will not affect your water filter or the quality of your water in any way. Have you checked the troubleshooting section? There might be helpful advice in that section of the manual for this problem.

We have a Westinghouse and there is a light in the freezer part and it is blinking red all the time. There is an on/off switch on it too. Plus the water doesn’t always fill up in the dispensers. Is the ice maker broken or can this be fixed.

Hi Phil, according to our research, holding the reset water and filter buttons for at least 3 seconds should work. I believe this may be an issue going on with the refrigerator itself. The light staying on will not affect your water filter or your water quality as long as your filter is changed every 6 months.

To reset your Kitchenaid filter light on your display first make sure the filters in correctly and water purged. Then if the light is still on re-open the filter door and reach up to the left of the filter where there is a lever that is supposed to lift up when you close the filter door. Lift up on the lever and hold it in for a few seconds. You will here the display beep and the light will go out. Make sure that when you close the filter door again that the filter pushes the lever up so the light remains out!

  285. Kory says

    March 16, 2015 at 3:02 pm

The water filter is most likely not snapped in all the way. If you feel that it is, and you’re still having issues, it could be the water valve leading to the refrigerator. To check, re-install the old filter. If water comes of the old filter and not the new filter, then there is an installation problem with the new filter and not the water valve. If water does not come out of the old or new filter, then the problem is the water valve. Let us know what the outcome is. I have included a link for our troubleshooting blog just in case: http://www.filtersfast.com/blog/index.php/2015/03/troubleshooting-tips-installing-refrigerator-filter/

Many refrigerators do come with an air filter to help neutralize odor and bacteria. With the refrigerator being so new, I wouldn’t expect the air filter to need to be changed since they are only supposed to be replaced every 6 months. I would suggest looking in the manual for how to reset the air filter reminder. It is just a timer that needs to be reset. If you give us your model number, we can certainly help out and see which replacement air filter you will need when the time comes.

Order filter inducator came on eventually grudge stopped dispensing. Filter replaced and gallons flushed but Order filter light still on. Was showing 13% remaining prior to flush now shows 12%. Only dispenses when arm is pushed but nothing through measured fill. Light “reset” mentioned above has not worked. Our light goes from on to dim then off.

The filter should be located at the bottom of your refrigerator unit. Another common location for the filter location is the back of the refrigerator, the lower right interior and the upper right interior. If you are unable to locate it, feel free to let us know so we can further assist you.

Specific instructions for flushing your refrigerator water filter vary depending on what is in the owners manual for this particular filter. Most manufacturers will recommend that you run between three to five gallons of water through your refrigerator water filter. To flush, all you will need is an empty bucket to empty the water into. Do you have a copy of your owners manual? It is best to follow the specific steps instructed by the filter manufacturer.

    Hi Suzanna,

Are you using the DA29-00003G water filter? Ensure that the following steps for installing your particular filter have been taken:
-Separate the fixed cap in the refrigerator by rotating
    it counterclockwise.
-Remove the water filter from the box and put a month indicator
sticker on the filter as shown.
    – Write the month you installed the filter on the label.
EX) If the water filter was installed in March, put “MAR”
    – Remove the protective cap then position and insert the filter as shown,
    – Slowly turn the water filter clockwise 90º to align the indication mark on the
cover, locking the filter in postion. Do not overtighten.

I was able to find the owners manual online and wanted to pass along just in case. Hopefully this can help with your issues, but if you have any further questions feel free to let us know. http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200609/20060929111002296_DA99-01012G-EN.pdf

After 14 days of the Water Filter Status light being at the ‘Replace Filter’ stage, the “Replace Filter” and “water” icons will glow at all times and blink continuously
during dispensing. Also, an alert chime will sound three times following dispensing. So, it seems that you will need to reset the status system again.

Reset Water Filter Status by Pressing the OPTIONS button to enter Options mode, then press LOCK to initiate the reset, then press MEASURED FILL to confirm that you
want to reset the status light. When the system is reset, the “ORDER” and “REPLACE” icons will disappear from the display screen.

Unfortunately, there is not a way to change the timer setting. These do not measure the water quality. Being that you already have a filter removing the chlorine, you may not need the extra filtration unless you want to keep the extra filtration step. If you want to change every 12 months, you can reset the light to green and change every other light reset. Hope that helps Ken!

We replaced our 15 year old refrigerator in May 2013, with a Whirlpool Model WRF560SEYM. We have a significant “Watersoft” activated carbon filter for our house water system, which is replaced annually, at considerable expense. This system worked fine for our old refrigerator (the motor required replacing, which is why it was replaced). The water/ice was good tasting and clear all the time.
With this new Whirlpool refrigerator we notice that the Water Filter requires replacing every six months. That is an added expense to an already significant household activated carbon filter system. To my mind, for our household specifically, this refrigerator water filter being replaced every six months seems superfluous.
Given our specific household water system, can the above Whirlpool model have the water filter replacement light re-programmed for say every nine or even twelve months? If so, how does one do that?

  380. Kory says

    June 12, 2013 at 11:35 am

It can depend on your model. Some models can have different instructions for resetting the light. What is your refrigerator model number?

  381. Kory says

    June 12, 2013 at 11:07 am

After changing the filter, the light must be reset back to green. If the reset didn’t take on the refrigerator, it will still flash orange and will soon turn to red. The whirlpool refrigerators should reset by Pressing and Releasing the interior Light Button 5 times relatively quickly. Sometimes on newer models, check for a ‘reset’ button on the front of the water dispenser control panel, and hold the button down until the light turns green.

  382. Kory says

    June 12, 2013 at 11:06 am

If the filter requires the button release, be sure to have the button pushed all of the way in to release the filter. Otherwise, if it’s just a simple twist release filter, then the o-rings may have adhered to the housing. They should apply a solid, steady pressure and the filter should start to slowly move. Turn counterclockwise to loosen, and clockwise to tighten.

  383. Kory says

    June 12, 2013 at 11:04 am

If you have not connected the water to the refrigerator, and water has not passed through the filter, then you can reset the indicator light. The filter life will not start until the water passes through your filter. Some Samsung refrigerators need to – Press and Hold the Ice Type and Child Lock Buttons at the same time for 3 seconds.

Some newer models may be different, and you may need to look at the manual, or look for a reset button near the dispenser.

Was the ice maker making ice before the filter change? It could be a number of different things. The water valve in the back of the refrigerator may have gone bad, or the ice maker unit itself may have gone bad. Those parts can be replaced (part numbers are below). A water line could be frozen which can happen, but is not a common issue. Consider a technician if you are unable to locate the problem.

    Hi Pat,
Flush the filter for 2 minutes. There will be a gap of water flow due to the air that was in the filter. Once the air is pushed out, the water should be allowed to run for another minute or so.

If this does not work, than the water solenoid may not be functioning correctly, and may need to be replaced. It could also be the water in the line may have been frozen if it got too close to the freezer.

Continuous beeping on the dispenser display with two hyphens on the freezer display only, usually means that the freezer temperature is warmer than 10 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is okay, then there is likely a fault with the rear computer module.

  398. Kory says

    April 2, 2013 at 4:39 pm

The filter light should be changed from the dispenser. The light will need to be reset accordingly to your model.

If the filter is not turned all of the way to make a seal, or if the O-rings are bad on the filter, it can cause a leak from around the filter.

Be sure that the filter is screwed in snugly (but do not over tighten). If you still notice a leak, remove the new filter and re-install the old filter to see if the leak is present on the old filter now too.

If so, then the filter receiver should be replaced. If it only leaks on the new filter, then the filter is defective.

    Hi Helen,

Make sure that the filter is installed all the way into the refrigerator receiver (which is the thing the filter goes into). The valve must be opened all of the way to allow water to pass through the filter. If it still does not work, put your old filter back in and see if the problem persist. It could be a faulty filter, or the receiver should be replaced. I have heard of some instances where the water lines can freeze and block water flow as well.

Hi Caesar, carbon filters will start losing the ability to filter contaminates once water is introduced to the carbon media. The carbon will start to oxidize, and lose its ability to remove chlorine and other contaminates.

The red light is mainly a timer, and is calculated for the optimal time to change the filter. You will start to notice the taste and odor start to come back into the water around that time.

  420. Alex says

    August 31, 2012 at 3:00 pm

There are different models but i am assuming you have the push button release filter in the base grille? You want to push the filter all the way in. Sometimes it takes a little more effort on some models than others which is mainly caused by a manufacturing irregularity in the receiver.

When you push it all the way in, it may take a little extra push at the end until you hear it ‘Click’. This is the sound of the button popping back out and locking the filter in. If this isnt working, you may need to replace the filter receiver. Be sure that you replace the filter cap from the old filter and put it on the new filter.

If you have whirlpools twist model, it shold just turn clockwise a quarter turn and lock in place. Having the filter cap on the filter should help give you leverage.

The filter is full of air and can take several seconds to push all of the air through the filter and out of the dispenser. Be sure that the filter is inserted all of the way into the despenser before turning and make sure that the filter is turned all of the way without forcing the filter.

I have not heard many issues with this type of filter. If the old filter was working, and now it does not work, it sounds like the receiver that the filter screws into could be bad and may need to be replaced.

I just replaced the water filter in my samsung fridge model rs261mdrs. Somehow the water would not flow. I replaced the brand new filter with the old filter with the same result: No water! I removed the filter altogether and depressed the water lever voila, water! I tried pushing the different buttons, ie “ice type” & “child lock” for 3 seconds, twice, to no avail! It seems like the filter is not opening the water line, because without the filter, water flows.
    Thanks a lot and BR,

Hi Debbie, this sounds like a timing issue. Depending on your refrigerator model, you may have to reset it a couple of times in order for the light to switch to the correct color indicator. We received a few concerns like yours with customers who have side by side refrigerators. Sometimes this also occurs when the filter has been in the refrigerator longer than recommended. Hope this helps! Thanks!

I have had nothing but problems with my whirlpool side by side, i too had a muk floating our of the filter and then when i ran the water floating in the water. Called whirlpool …. nothing, but that isn’t anything new, because whirlpool dances around every question you present to them. My question is why does or did my filter light stay on in green mode after I took out the filter, my water completely stopped running, and after process of elimination, it was the filter that needed replaced. But while waiting for the filter to arrive, the green light was still shining bright at the top of my refrigerator side where you have to reset it…
That is alarming to me ? any ideas

I have a whirlpool side by side. I couldn’t get the indicator light to reset after replacing the filter. I unplugged the refrigerator, waited about 30 seconds and plugged it back in. The light was green. I went through the steps to reset it anyway, and it blinked red a few times and then turned green again. It seems to be working, now.

    Hi Faye,

We checked with our Certified Water Specialist and he recommended the following:
You want to be sure that you are trying to remove your water filter in the correct direction and not accidentally trying to tighten it. Avoid using any wrenches, because that could break your receiver. A simple rule to follow is “Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty!” If you find that you continue to have difficulty, you may need to consult with a repair man so that you will not have a mishap occur that could create a costly repair. Hope this helps and all the best! Thanks for your inquiry.

We were opening the fridge door to see if maybe the coils of tubing that hold the water were frozen, and the new filter unit SHOT out of the compartment like a missile and gave me a huge goose egg on the head. Hey Danny,

You’re not the first to have that red light stay on when changing your Whirlpool fridge filter. Something that has worked with others in the past is to hold down the reset button for a good period of time. Depending on your model, it may beep. Once you hear the beep, then try pressing the reset button five times quickly.

I hope this works; let us know if it doesn’t and we’ll see what else we can come up with.

    Hello Lloyd,

I found the following information on Samsung’s site. Can you try this and let me know if it works?

The water filter indicator light is designed to turn orange after five months or 450 gallons, and red after six months or 500 gallons.
To reset the water filter indicator so that the indicator turns green, follow these steps:

1.Press the Ice Type Button and Child Lock Button simultaneously for 3 seconds. Note: Hold the buttons for only 3 seconds. If you press these 2 buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds, the reset function ceases.

1.Release the buttons and repeat the same step one more time. The water filter indicator light should turn green.
Note: Does not apply to RFG299 model.

For 2010 SIde By SIde models, press and hold the WATER button on the display panel

    Hello Eric,
As I’m sure you’ve already discovered, there’s not a wealth of info online about your particular fridge and the filter.
I did find this owner’s manual, though it doesn’t really give any specific details about the location of the water filter or how to change it. http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200706/20070626065918031_DA99-00810A_v0.6.pdf
As to its location, most newer refrigerators have the filters in or below the freezer compartment, or even in the fresh food sections.
Some refrigerators, however, have an “inline” water filter plumbed into the tubing running to the refrigerator. This would be located behind the unit. Other times you can find the filter in the base grill of your unit.
Poke around a bit and see if you can find anything. Your old filter might have a model number on it, which would be very helpful (we carry one popular Samsung filter, which you can view here: http://www.filtersfast.com/Samsung-DA29-00003A-refrigerator-water-filter.asp.
It doesn’t seem like this will fit your model, but perhaps it will give you a better idea as to what to look for. An inline filter, on the other hand, would look something like this: http://www.filtersfast.com/IF-35-Waterpik-water-filters.asp
    We’ll get this figured out!

    March 30, 2009 at 1:46 pm

    Hello Kimberly,
It sounds like you could have one of two problems.
It could be that scale has built up in your pipes and is now coming through your refrigerator filter. Refrigerator filters will usually stop particles this large, even though their main purpose is to reduce the taste and odor of chlorine.
The other problem is that you might have gotten a bad filter, and pieces of the media are coming through. This is perhaps less likely.
To see if it is a result of your new filter, you may try taking the filter out and running the water without it. Some fridges will not allow you to do this without a dummy filter.
Let us know if that helps at all.

If you’re having problems thinking the filter is stuck…did you take the grille off? On my Whirlpool side-by-side, it’s attached with 2 clips, one just inside each hinge. Pull gently from on the part outside/below the hinges. Once you have the grille off, the filter should turn easily. And you can clean things out while you’ve got them apart. Slide the cover off the end of the old filter and onto the new one. BTW – my old filter leaked a bit, so you may want to have a towel on the floor.

When changing the water filter under the fridge the plastic ‘yolk’ type handle snapped off and now the old filter is jammed in there and there’s nothing to grip onto to turn it. It’s always been tight but this time it was stuck solid. I tried pouring soapy water down the retaining housing while covering the weep hole underneath and turning the canister with some long nose pliers but those two o-ring seals at the unreachable end won’t budge. There’s not much to grip onto and I’m thinking of drilling a couple of holes in the filter end to get a better purchase on it but not knowing the inner design of the filter and wall thickness I don’t know if this would be a bad idea. Is there an easy fix-in-place solution or do I have to replace the whole cartidge assembly? Thanks.

Amana ARSE665 filter state indicator LED reset: Press and hold dispenser lock (far left) together with the water select button (next to left). The filter light will change from red to green. Some have mentioned pressing and holding the dispensor lock together with the auto/light button — this disables the panel altogether. Repeating the combination reenables the panel.

I have a Whirlpool side-by-side with a water filter. About two weeks after we bought it, the water started tasting funny (almost like dirt) so I replaced the filter. Three days later the water tasted bad again. This is a new water line from the supply under the sink. The water from the sink tastes fine. Any ideas?

I am also interested in an answer to this question posted above by Karen:
“This is sort of a follow up question. I want to know how refrigerators know when it is time to change the filter. Is it just set to notify you every year or is it actually linked to the condition of the filter and once the filter gets to a certain threshhold the light comes on, whether that be in 6 months or 2 years. The reason I ask is that I am single and so I don’t use the water as much as would be the case in a normal family. I want to know if when the light comes on, is it because the filter is actually worn out/dirty or is it just because a preset timer has expired. I feel like I have to keep shelling out 50 bucks every time the red light is on while the filter I am throwing out still may have a lot of life left in it. Hopefully you get my drift. Thanks”

My side by side fridgidare fridge freezer is 4 years old. The drinking water will not come out, it leaks into the fridge through the filter. I have changed the cartridge and set the reset button. I had a repair person come out only to be told he didn’t know why it was leaking through the filter into the fridge.

I have a whirlpool fridge (side by side) model ED25RFXFB01. The water dispenser stooped delivering water while there is still water coming to the ice maker. I changed the filter but the problem is still there. A friend suggested to change the water inlet valve and I am still running in the smae problem. I appreciate any suggestion.

Model # 596.51679100 Kenmore Limited Edition side by side is made by Amana so use the Amana instructions lised above. Let us know if they do not work for you.

Any time you do not use your water dispenser for a few weeks it is recommended that you change the filter. It is possible for bacteria to grow in the filter media if not used on a regular basis and bacteria was introduced to the filter prior to it not being used.

We bought a refrigerator from a neighbor, who gave us her filter because it was only 3 weeks old. We forgot to flush the line (which probably hadn’t been used for 3 years). Perhaps two months later, we flushed the line. Do you think the filter is still good? I was diagnosed with giardia. Could that be from the saturated filter which is not nearly 6 months old but possibly full of contaminants? And the fridge is a Whirlpool, but the filter is Kenmore. Does that matter?

Im trying to reset my filter light on my Amana fridge. The filter light never flashes when I press the auto and lock buttons. it will turn all the indicater lights off. so if the water is selected the green light is not lit up. if I do it again the filter light comes back on and then the green light comes on above the water button.

Whirlpool side by side fridge, same problem as S K HONG &
GREGG posted in June and August this year.
The Red lign indicator is always on after replacing the filter and pressing the resetting
    button 5 times.
Is this a fault in the fridge ?

I installed a new filter and reset the indicator button for a new filter on my GE fridge, but no water comes out. It goes into the filter, but won’t come out of the front of the fridge. I replaced the filter because no water came out of the filter.

I have an Amana bottom freezer model equipped with an inside water filter. I changed the filter and the system worked normally for about 2 weeks. Now the water coming out only comes out in a trickle. What could the problem be? Thank you.

The GE inline water filter model GXRQ has been changed twice and still the icemakere has a storng smell of rotten eggs. Removing the filter stops the stench. The icemaker has been changed as have the lines and the water valve.

I have a Whirlpoo side by side refrigerator model with ice dispensing system and ultraease II water filtratio. system. I put in the filter for my 6 months old whirlpool yesterday. I pressed and release the Light Button 5 times quickly (in 10 seconds). It still stays red. How long you have to wait for the light button to turn green.

The model that you listed will reset with either the Maytag or Amana directions.
Maytag Refrigerators – Press and Hold The Light and Lock Buttons until the Water Filter light flashes.
Amana Refrigerators – Press and hold the Auto and Dispenser Lock buttons until the water filter status indicator light flashes.
Please let us know which one works.
